Pros

Nothing springs to mind, apart from not having to endure your work colleagues in person for 2 days of the week. The pay is ok but it's not worth the mental torment you will have to endure.

Cons

If you are someone who thrives in a workplace where your presence is strictly monitored, then this might be your ideal setting. Here, you are required to be physically in the office three days a week, with your attendance meticulously tracked by pass monitoring. This practice underscores the level of trust, or lack thereof, that senior management places in its employees. For those who find a peculiar comfort in uncertainty, particularly about job security, this workplace might just appeal to you. The constant specter of layoffs looms over your head, making each day a gamble on whether you'll be part of the next cut. Moreover, if you are someone who is drawn to a challenging, if not toxic, environment, you might find yourself fitting in seamlessly here. This workplace operates on a plane far removed from what many would consider normal. In my personal experience, it ranks as the most disagreeable workplace I have encountered in my entire career. Alarmingly, it took me only a few weeks to realize the necessity of planning my departure. The organizational culture here is devoid of collaboration. It quickly became apparent that the employees were more engrossed in office politics and backstabbing than in achieving tangible results. The pace of work is glacial, hindered by a persistent reluctance to share information and a deeply ingrained suspicion towards any attempt at teamwork. This results in an environment that is not only hostile but also counterproductive. In my previous roles, I have been part of teams that were capable of accomplishing in a month what would take an entire year in this setting, owing to the excessive bureaucracy and interpersonal friction. The entire duration of my employment was marred by heightened anxiety levels, and my mental well-being deteriorated significantly. I would strongly advise anyone considering employment here to reconsider and explore other opportunities. Based on my experience, the regret will be immediate and palpable from the moment you step through the door.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We value transparency and take your concerns seriously. Regarding our return-to-office policy, At Checkout, we strongly believe in-person collaboration provides more opportunities for our employees to come together to collaborate and build meaningful relationships which creates a better sense of belonging, connection, and community. That's why we ask employees to come to the office three days a week We're committed to fostering an autonomous environment where individuals lead their work and have ample opportunities for growth. Our structured career paths and pay-for-performance culture ensure fair rewards and development. Our flat organizational structure typically allows individuals to take on broader scopes and complexity of work. We acknowledge the need for improvement in diversity initiatives and have implemented specific programs, internal communities, and promoted internal talent recently. We continually adapt processes to create a more inclusive workplace. Regarding layoffs, we are reviewing our communication strategy and enhancing workforce planning to provide better structural career pathing. We appreciate your feedback as it helps us identify areas for improvement. We strive to create a supportive and rewarding environment for all employees.

Pros

- Many would say free breakfast and lunch, but I rather we didn't have it, it encourages over-eating and unhealthy eating, it feels like a prison meal to me. Instead, I would rather have a salary increase in line with inflation figures than breadcrumbs. - There is potential for great growth as a business if things are done better.

Cons

- Forcing a change from 2 days to 3 days mandatory office presence days ignoring what employees prefer, and the environment that makes each person at its best performance (for me, it's not in the office where there are distractions and waste of time in commute and its expenses). - Crowded office and desks, and planning to add more they say ahead of 3 days office attendance enforcement. - Expectation to do more than your working hours, if you can just sleep and work over 12 hours a day, you are probably just "doing fine". - Talented people are leaving, looking for better employers that can respect their humanity, offer flexible/trust-based work, less office politics and exercise hierarchy control, job stability where there are no silent massive layoffs, and better pay. - Presence of some bullies that know well how to steal credit for other people's efforts and get congratulations from upper management (like those using a VP title where they are not VP).

Thank you for your feedback. We know April was a difficult month for employees who didn’t share our office-first hybrid work sentiment. Now that we’re settling into our new working model, we believe that two days of home-based work balanced with the in-office benefits to office culture, team productivity, and merchant service is the right thing. On your other points, bullies have no home at Checkout.com, and people who witness this behavior are asked to speak up to their HR Business Partner to ensure our company remains a psychologically safe and supportive workplace.

Pros

- Interesting tech stack - Engineering teams are relatively free to choose the tools that they use - Good opportunities for career development - Good but not market leading package overall - Great work life balance

Cons

- Commercial sells features before they are ready or even built & promises delivery dates without involving the actual engineers who will build stuff - London office doesn't have any food in it other than nuts 🥲 - Good senior people have been replaced by external candidates multiple times - Executives are seemingly getting more disconnected from employees as the company grows - Complete inflexibility about 'flexible' working arrangements, if you can't do the mandated days then you have to leave - Spent 1 year being extremely vague about what the return to the office would look like and then implemented a company wide policy that not many people wanted

Dear colleague, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review on your experience with us over the past few years. It's so good to see you've enjoyed opportunities for career development and experienced a good work life balance during your time with us. And, we want to acknowledge the frustrations you’ve shared. At Checkout.com we will soon be moving to a hybrid way of working, where most of our teams split their time working between the office and home. And you’re right, we’ve allocated days for departments to promote collaboration across our teams and help us capacity plan. We also have people who are in fully remote roles, and there will be exceptions for fully remote working options. While we’ve tried to keep communication on this topic as open and transparent as possible, it’s clear we need to improve here. We, too, are navigating uncharted waters, trying new things and are learning as we go, so thank you for your feedback. Mostly though, we can’t wait to get our colleagues back together and are looking forward to welcoming our people back to our offices over the coming months. Thank you for going into such detail with your feedback; we take your comments about the other elements of your experience seriously and have shared these with the relevant teams. We wish you all the best and if there's anything else you'd like to add or share, please feel free to email people.acquisition@checkout.com. Thanks again, Kerry (Chief People Officer)
