Interesting, cutting edge research in every field. You will go far here if you're interested in basic science. Very smart folks and great programs for university students.

Cons

It will be hard to move up without a PHD. The many levels of bureaucracy can inhibit any your progress. Poor compensation is rampant.

When I joined LBNL I was new to the job and to the country. It has been a great learning experience from a scientific and cultural point of view.

Cons

LBNL has a rather large campus, with many facilities but it lacks a child-care center and the prices of the only on-site cafeteria are rather high.
