Shady practice being rewarded

Pros

Great benefits and passionate people (mostly).

Cons

Summary: Sales Rep who pulled off several shady deals are flagged to the sales management, but ignored and covered up. The said sales rep was not penalised with HubSpot’s use-good-judgement plan, but instead promoted. Background: An AE sent out several emails to existing customers, telling them that they can procure a new SKU without additional cost. Essentially, the AE gave a major and perpetual discount off the existing products, and added the new SKU in the new contract at full price. With that, the AE gets recognised for the full revenue associated with the new SKU (yes, that is how the HubSpot sales commission plan used to work. It was recently changed in Feb 2020). This does not positively grow the business in the long run, and on the contrary, harms the business which operates on a subscription basis. When the services team has consolidated the deals closed due to this bad practice, the management turned their cheeks and ask for the team to not “finger-point”. It makes sense, as such big discounts require the approval of the higher sales management and they were part of the team that made such shady deals possible. Due to the “new revenue” brought in by the said AE, he was promoted in the following month. It's a slap in the face for the others. Conclusion: Hard work is overrated at HubSpot. Learn how to game the system.

I've been a bit tied up with COVID 19 response, but needless to say gaming the system is not how folks win and not at all how we encourage people to operate, so I hope you'll flag this to your HR business partner and/or to sales ops as that's the best mechanism for a fix here-it's impossible for me to address without a geo/territory/manager/context. Sorry again to hear about your experience, Katie

Pros

The company offers an incredible culture and worklife balance.

Cons

The company allows a lot of manager abuses to take place and go unchecked. Depending on the group you are in, this isn't a place to truly grow your career unless you're willing to spend significant time.

This is a tough one to read, I'm sorry to hear your experience with us was less than stellar. We investigate every single employee claim as it relates to accusations of mismanagement, so I strongly refute that we allow any claim to go uninvestigated and followed up on, but nonetheless I'm saddened to hear that you left a company where you felt the overall culture was great because of a manager situation that was suboptimal. I'm spending a lot of time with Alison as it relates to the culture and leadership of the services org, so will look at any recent challenges or issues that are flagged as part of that conversation and hopefully make meaningful improvement around any concerns or issues you reference above. As always, happy to hear feedback on what we can do better, thanks for sharing it. -Katie

A place to start, but definitely not a place to stay.

Pros

When you get hired at HubSpot, they make you feel like you hit the jackpot upon jackpots. And in some ways they're right. Fun company culture, lots of free food and cool perks like unlimited vacation and sexy office space. If you are lucky to get a good manager, you can have a great career path at HubSpot. There are many people who have done very well because they are talented and smart, but also because they had a good manager advocating for their success. It's a great place to start if you're looking to get a cool name on your resume and learn the ins and outs of a SaaS company.

Cons

There are so many holes in this company that a candy wall and unlimited vacation cannot fix. Promotions are totally out of control. There are many senior employees who do not deserve the titles or pay they have and continuously get away with underperforming and mismanaging their teams. There is a complete lack of management training so people who are promoted into a management role have ZERO idea what they're doing. Company feedback forms clearly identified that junior employees felt there was a lack of management and senior employees acknowledged the absence of management training. Nothing was done about that when I was there. Salary was also a huge pain point across many departments. For one of the more expensive cities in the country and a company that claims to be doing extremely well, they could afford to pay employees (who are claimed to be extremely important), more than the bare minimum. It was heartbreaking to see a chart shared at a company meeting listing what an entry level employee should be making at a software company and it was $10k more than what employees are offered in entry level roles. Seriously?
