It's A Job

Pros

It can feel very rewarding to get someone in a car. Whether it's a young person getting their own car for the first time, or someone with challenging credit. You CAN make some decent money, but it's very unpredictable due to commission only pay. The company does try to give you a diverse work schedule (it's retail after all) by giving you a 3 day weekend off every 6 weeks. But your schedule changes constantly. Decent benefits.

Cons

Management are full of themselves. They have many methods in place to help "develop" you...code for micro-manage. They definitely have favorites and play to that. Work/life balance is somewhat up to you. If you choose to answer your phone on your day off and potentially go in to close a sale...that's up to you. Or you can split it. But it's a constant mental struggle to take your days off or feel like you're losing money.

Pros

Great place to start career, fun atmosphere, great training, good core values, different experiences every day. Co workers.

Cons

Compensation is not great, expected to come in early and stay late, weekend hours, recently hired managers are clueless and in meetings all day, preaching about work life balance is garbage-there is none. Hard work is rarely rewarded, Lots of carrot dangling for promotion. Senior managers avoid customer service situations at all costs, then explain how they would have handled it in a different/better way.

Pros

Nice people, small company so you can own your work, nice vacation policy.

Cons

Absolutely no career movement (be happy with the level you come in at because chances are you will not move regardless of how much additional responsibility you take on), low pay comparable to other companies in the area, little work flexibility re: working from home (still think work must be done at your desk), do not promote from within. Anyone coming in should know that in order to be promoted you must go through MAP which requires 1) presentation to senior leaders about your CarMax resume 2) series of behavorial interviews and 3) a case. You have to be invited to MAP and cannot apply for open positions above your level if you are not MAP certified. Ridiculous considering behavioral interviews are an indicator of potential behavior for the unkown - and as a current employee you have a track record to stand on. This is why it is harder to get promoted than to get the initial job - it takes less hurdles to come in the door then it does to move up
