Pros

*Great people *Great opportunities for growth *Generous 401K matching program *Nice bonus structure *Generous restricted stock grants for management *Great local community focus

Cons

*Once deemed a growth-candidate, it can take MONTHS to get to a point where you are ready to interview for a promotion (the process gets more complex the higher you go) *Bonus is based too closely on store performance instead of individual performance *Restricted stock grants take three years to vest before they begin to pay out *Senior management is disorganized and operate mostly behind closed doors *Pay is decent but more and more the company seems to be paying less and less for the same job as it tightens its belt for growth

Pros

Meet good people when you work here. Ability to earn decent paycheck depending on how many hours you work. Can move to different stores country wide.

Cons

They penalize you for being one minute late. Have weekly meetings that you do not get paid for. The commission is amongst the lowest in auto sales. The sales managers micromanage as if they have nothing else to do. You have no freedom to sale your own way want you to be very robotic. The only way to move up in the company is if they managers like you or not. Has nothing to do with work ethic or your drive. Everything is about being liked by managers if they do not like you they will make your job a living hell. You could make so much more money at another dealership. The sales consultants are truly under paid and appreciated. I wouldn't recommend working here at all. They preach work life balance but an order to make a decent living you have to work 60 plus hours a week. Like I said don't be one minute late! Doesn't matter if you worked 60 hours but if you're one minute late they will write you up.

Pros

Decent benefits, flexible hours for part timers. Helped me get into the sales industry.

Cons

Man peers get offended easily and complain to management. EVERYTHING is held against you and is recorded. Writeups for every tiny infraction. Constant feeling of minimal job security. Coworkers got fired for putting 4 miles on a Mercedes they wanted to test drive. Management has the customer's back before yours. You are fed lies about the new car business to share with your customers. Now that I work at a new car dealer, I am realizing how much of a scam Carmax is. In order to be a good salesperson, you have to have good product. Carmax cars are absolute trash. Mechanical issues, cosmetically gross, recon is pathetic and customers constantly shocked at the poor condition of vehicles. Everything is so INCREDIBLY corporate. Successful sales practices are not encouraged, carmax salespeople are glorified Walmart greeters. The pay was GARBAGE. You work your butt off for $1000 paychecks. I'd rather work hourly. Junior management micro-manages, looks out for themselves, and worries about disappointing senior management. Senior management are disconnected, sensitive, and have inflated sense of self worth. Cars are sold at 10-50% over fair market value, Carmax makes huge front gross profit, and yet employees are handed a pittance while Tom Folliard counts his mansions and Ferraris.
