Pros

Very good benefits and opportunities if you're a favorite.

Cons

In my 10 years working there I knew 20 people who went out on medical leave. I've never worked for any company where the stress broke people. I know another 50 people who left to go do same job for a competitor. Paylocity often took 10 people at our end of year which is the busiest time . 10 years this happened over and over and later Kronos, Proliant and Ceridian joined the list. These companies have a work from home which Paychex fights. 10 thousand plus or more in salary differences and Glass Door ratings higher. Everyone would say how much better it was after leaving. Management listened cared and took care of them. We would often have up to 5 to 10 different managers in a year. Constant changes and poor execution with tons of application or hardware issues. Often leaving us on the floor having to be self sufficient to survive in our roles. If you weren't a yes man and spoke up you would then be black listed. It was often very difficult to provide proper customer service due to this. The worst part is due to the attrition rate's often above 25 to 30 percent yearly. The excessive case loads due to people leaving created a vicious cycle. Then the final reason I left with all of these issues was management deciding to combine three seperate roles into one. Two of those roles already with high attrition, Payroll and Time and Attendance. The training for this change was horrible. When asking to get re trained we were denied and told to "Do your best." This was clients payroll and many of us never wanted to do payroll as we were hired for HRO or Time and Attendance. Worse part is there was no compensation for two new added roles either. I loved my initial role, excelled and created raving fans and won numerous awards and bonuses every year. I put 6 figures into my 401k in 10 year's. But it was constant morale and a very caotic extremely stressful environment. Management even when told, even when they broke employees just never got the stress or caseloads or really cared. It was take it or leave it attitude that made me leave.

Pros

The starting pay is okay and benefits are great. The schedule is nice and consistent which helps with planning events.

Cons

The work load for a payroll specialist is overwhelming and hard to do. Once you have a full set of clients you will have over 400 to handle. If you have what is called a "semi-day" you will have over 100 calls/emails to make and that many payrolls to run. That means you are glued to your desk for 8 hours and if you are lucky you will take a lunch but it won't be for the hour you are given. It will be for only 30 minutes as they tell you can't have the full hour but they will buy food for you so you can continue to work while eating. They preach their culture, but they don't listen to you when you come to them with ideas and solutions. The management team does not care about your work load, or what is going on with you as long as your clients are taking care of. Workload is just insane and will not get any easier.

Outside Sales Consultant Candidates Beware

Pros

You will generally be able to learn about the HCM industry, because Paychex offers multiple solutions.

Cons

Please think about the fact that Paychex pays their sales consultants 10K-25K less of a base salary than their competitors. It goes without saying how much they value their employees and is evident in the turnover. They brag about a nice commission plan, but the only way to be successful is to be that dirty salesperson I'm sure nobody wants to be. Ask any successful salesperson at Paychex about their success and how they achieved it , and I promise you in less than a minute you will realize they are more often then not, ego-maniacs who brag about their accomplishments rather than try to see beyond themselves and how their knowledge can help others. This is probably because they are trying so hard to fend for themselves because the base salary is so low for the amount of work and stress it takes to penetrate a market where payroll is highly commoditized. The company culture from a sales standpoint stinks , and there are multiple daily conflicts between seven enter divisions and I have witnessed many of my colleagues experience bullying , harassment, and lack of quick response by management to resolve the issue . Do your homework on other companies , there are some great ones out there to work for like Paylocity, Trinet, Ultimat Software, iSolved, Namely, and even some local providers that many of the best Paychex sales reps have left to. They all offer better compensation and overall value if you're looking for a stable career without as much stress. Don't waste your time with Paychex low ball offers if you want a successful career in sales, you are better than that! Btw, in all my time at Paychex , I have only come across 3 current clients willing to give a reference and Paychex has more than 600K clients in North America. They are getting blown away by newer companies with better strategies and resources, also a more ethical company culture overall.
