Bad Executive Leadership

Pros

Great Product Can make good money depending on segment and territory

Cons

Everything except the product If you don't get a good territory, no matter the segment (SMB, Commercial, or Enterprise), it will be extremely difficult to succeed. Those who have the Bay Area, NYC, Boston do well in every segment. If you don't get one of those territories, or maybe other large cities like Chicago or Atlanta.... Good luck... One of their values is "Build Trust Through Transparency", but that couldn't be further from the truth. They lie about everything. Forced Return to Office (3+ days for most of company, 5 days week for others) except for when they wanted to do mass layoffs, then it was okay for everyone to work from home and they fired everyone behind a computer screen Showed zero remorse for lay offs and never really showed like they cared about their employees. Felt like a number as it got very corporate very fast. They are just worried about going public and will do anything to anyone to make that happen. They over-hired, especially across the sales org and fired people with 3, 4, and 5 months of tenure, never even giving them a chance or opportunity to succeed with an unrealistic quota. It's very political and people go places that play the corporate game. Leadership is weak at the top as they over projected revenue for 2022 and then about 20% of their employees around the world had to pay for it. Pay is below average for most roles and super stingy about negotiating a higher salary. Also, they say unlimited PTO, but that's not entirely true as you will be judged for the amount of time you take off.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on your experience with OwnBackup. We are sorry to hear that you were impacted by our decision to eliminate certain roles throughout the business. While we’ve grown significantly year over year, the world has changed much more dramatically and as a result we have had to make a strategic organizational realignment. While this decision was extremely challenging, we remain positive about our future. In terms of salary and PTO, we offer competitive salaries that are above the market average and offer unlimited PTO to ensure that everyone’s work/life balance is respected and considered. We wish you the best of luck in your next chapter and thank you for your contributions to OwnBackup.

The worst place I've ever worked

Pros

The offices certainly have good amenities, if you have the time and freedom to use them. Also, if your boss or 'c-suite leader' likes you, you'll get promoted, otherwise, goodluck!

Cons

I have worked for many toxic companies and this is by far the worst. Leaders are unequipped to do their jobs. They gossip about each other, and worse, about their own employees. If you aren't willing to speak poorly about others to get into the 'cool kids club' then don't bother ever trying to get promoted. The company preaches trust through transparency and other values, but doesn't uphold any of them. From the CEO down, this company plays favorites, it honestly feels like being in Mean Girls. If I could go back in time, I would never take this job, and suggest you stay far, far away from this toxic environment.

Pros

This company is growing fast with a number of investors. The product is strong and easy to sell. They are looking to expand product reach and offerings.

Cons

The culture is not healthy at all. It is "Work hard, play hard." Everyone in sales and the other departments work long hours while extended vacations frowned upon. We were pressured to work in the office during COVID even though we were told it was optional. It has an atmosphere of a boys club or fraternity. It is a workplace with heavy drinking (alcohol). There is always beer, wine and hard liquor in the office. There are times when people are drinking and even drunk by lunch time. The company events are all centered around drinking and and partying. All levels of leadership drink very heavily. I have seen employees (up to the highest level in the organization) drink to the point of slurred speech and blackout. The "Presidents Club" environment for top performers is all about drinking and it was embarrassing to be a part of. I saw people blacking out after dinner and being outright rude to co-workers and others in and around the event. To make things even worse most employees commute to the office and after work events by personal vehicle, then end up driving home drunk. It is sad to see the trickle down effect of the alcohol abuse problems from the top level in the company.

I would like to address some of the concerns you raised in your review of OwnBackup. My goal is not to convince you to change your mind, but help you understand what we do to create a safe environment for our employees. First, we do not tolerate excessive use of alcohol, as is outlined in our Code of Conduct. We take corrective action if our policy is broken. Safety of our employees is, and will always be, our number one priority. While we do offer alcohol at many of our events, we always provide shuttle services as well as a corporate Uber account should someone need a ride. During the height of the pandemic we encouraged employees to work from wherever they felt comfortable. If you felt any pressure at all to be in the office, that was not intended. Once vaccines did become available, we partnered with a nearby hospital to help team members easily get the vaccine if they wanted it. As we slowly reopened, we took many precautions, such as weekly free covid-testing, temperature checks, provided ample personal protective equipment, and enhanced cleaning. If employees feel uncomfortable for any reason, we highly encourage them to speak directly with their manager or HR. We also offer an anonymous hotline through our benefits provider to report misconduct. Finally, as one of our company benefits, we rolled out unlimited paid time off, globally. This benefit is meant to empower employees to take time off when they need it. We even send reminders to employees to take advantage of this benefit. As you know from your time at OwnBackup, one of our values is “culture is as important as results”. We seek to balance strong business results with creating a fun and collaborative atmosphere. As we continue to grow we will remain focused on delivering results and creating an inclusive and positive environment. -Charles Johnston, EVP, Sales
