Pros

There aren't any anymore. It used to be a fairly stable employer, but not anymore. Management just plain sucks, and that's putting it mildly. If you don't mind working for unscrupulous, unethical, law-breaking people, this is your company.

Cons

They just laid off almost 150 loss prevention employees, with an average age of about 52, and with over 20 years average experience. They kept all the young, inexperienced kids. If you are of retirement age (55 plus) chances are you are being laid off.

Pros

When I first began working there, LM was the best place in the world. The management was supportive, advancement was possible to a degree (once I had a child, my ability to advance vanished), the money was good and the benefits were decent. I found my work interesting and my colleagues were good people, smart and talented. The first few years I was there, training was provided and there was a support system. The office was a fun and communal place to be, we celebrated milestone events together and it was like a family. I really thought I would retired from LM at the end of my career.

Cons

In the last couple of years that I was there, the focus turned from being a supportive environment to money, money, money. One year, they gave us crystal things that said something like LM made billions of dollars. A few weeks later, they pleaded poverty and fired people. They chopped the neck off the company. The bloated head stayed and the bottom feeders flourished, but they fired good decent people many of whom had given 20, 30 or even more years to the company. My last boss was a venal person who took great pains to find your weaknesses and exploit them. I was told that I had a terrible reputation with another department of about 60 people and when I questioned further, I was told that ONE person had expressed a negative opinion of me in a survey and everyone else had either not responded or had said positive things. That one negative comment was used to deny me a raise. I was downsized shortly thereafter. Also, LM had really expensive health insurance and you could only get it from Aetna, which coincidentally is where Ted Kelly, the chairman of LM, used to work. How is it that such a large company can't negotiate better health insurance deals?

Pros

Liberty Mutual has a very good corporate culture. We constantly have parties and contests to reward our employees for providing excellent service to our customers. The company makes sure that if you work hard you are rewarded for your efforts.

Cons

I am sure it happens in every job, but I'd say the worst thing about working here is istening to fellow employees complain about custoimers all day. Liberty Mutual is also very lenient with employee discipline. The company gives it employees several chances to turn themselves around and works very hard to make sure that the employees are satisfied. However, I feel too much time is spent trying to satisfy employees that are not working up to their potential in the first place.
