Pros

Good salary; generous education program; nice views from the site

Cons

No sense of mission; no interest in seeking economic benefit of taxpayer-funded research; a lot of snarky, unpleasant people; lack of onsite parking; unsafe walkways; leadership shows little interest in operational staff/achievements (versus scientific staff); areas/divisions are siloed; the least woman-friendly place I have ever worked; everything done at the last minute.

Career Suicide

Pros

It's slow paced and very few people are doing real work, so you have a lot of time to do other things. The hill also has a nice view of the bay area.

Cons

They barely pay you for above mentioned slow pace. Most of the staff in middle management (along with myself) even though we have phds in STEM know that we can not afford to live in the bay area. The perceived prestige of working at a national lab is enough to get naive young people in the door. Most people either promptly leave leading to high turnover and high overhead, or realize they don't have to do anything to get a small paycheck, time with their family if they have one, and a pension in 20-30 years. Unfortunately the pay being as much as 50-60% of market rates means that real sacrifices must be made if one wants to have a family or live in general in the bay area. I have a colleague who lives in a van. He has his engineering degree. An physics BS from Harvard was hired as an RA making 40k/year in the bay area. Do you think he's staying? Most of my coworkers do not own cars because we can't afford them, which is good because the lab is reducing parking constantly. My advice to my younger self is to not be so impressionable with regards to working in a national lab and evaluate working here similar to another company. I pivoted my engineering career to work on energy and climate change, but I regret doing it at Berkeley Lab.

Serious Cuts are Happening Here

Pros

If you are a cutting edge scientist or your job is indispensable, you are set. Some departments are wonderful to work for, but others are toxic. Benefits are fine for now, but they are seriously declining due to budget restraints.

Cons

Depending on the department you work for and your job responsibilities, this can be the greatest place to work or the worst. OCFO (Office of the Chief Financial Officer), in particular, has a very bad reputation. Do not apply for a job in this office if you find an opening! They have a habit of firing people before their 6 month probation period so they don't have to pay severance or COBRA and then they will repost the position to squeeze 6 months work out of the next person before they get fired. This practice has been going on for years. Upper management has been bringing in their own people under sketchy business practices, something well-known within the LBL community. The problem is new people have no idea what's going on. People change their lives to get jobs here and management has no problems forcing them out early leaving them with no salary or insurance. Everyone in this company is very nervous about losing their jobs right now.
