Pros

You meet some fantastic people and excellent training before I started my role.

Cons

This company is one of the most vile and horrible workplaces I have ever had the misfortune of working for. In particular the Australian arm of H&M is unprofessional, unsupportive and fosters a culture of workplace bullying. To the next department managers and visual merchandisers of the Adelaide store be very wary before applying, there is a disturbing level of bullying by upper management that included verbal abuse, spying on staff, random intrusive locker searches through your personal belongings, extreme micromanagement and very intrusive interviews after a sick day where you are asked what your symptoms were, what did your doctor say and if/what they prescribed. You will feel too intimidated not to answer these questions despite it being a complete breach of your privacy. These are done to make staff feel too intimidated to take their sick days. I raised all these issues to a HR representative and area management and who all put down this behaviour as a ‘personality clash’ and did nothing to protect staff despite that fact that they had voiced that they felt unsafe, intimidated and bullied. They insisted that his behaviour was not a form of bullying but rather part of a ‘driven’ management style. This company does not care about its people, it is run by extremely unqualified people who rose up in the company simply because they stuck around long enough and knew the right people in head office but don’t have any formal training or qualifications in management, effective communication, leadership or empathy.

Pros

Not much to be said for pros...you can use them to progress your career so you can find employment elsewhere

Cons

Area management-nothing is ever enough for them, I’ve experienced being taken into the office after starting my shift at 6am with no breaks in order to make the store look as good as possible for the area team, only to be screamed at, belittled and made feel like a generally terrible person for my work not being good enough, this resulted in me doing a full 12 hour day with over two hours of this sitting in the office to receive feedback (a poor excuse to scream at myself and the rest of the management team as opposed to help a clearly understaffed store for two hours). They ask us as stores to give them direct feedback whilst they slate us in store and tear apart all your hard work in a rude and disgusting way, do you honestly think we’re going to turn around be like ‘oh yes you’ve just torn me apart and told me I’m severely underperforming (their way of threatening your job), but here’s some feedback about how rude you are’? Honestly we all know this isn’t going to happen, you have enough reviews here to make a list of feedback for yourselves to work on, which to be honest begs the question of all of YOUR performance as an area team. Snap out of it - lose your goddam snobby attitudes. Help your stores more. Retrain yourselves or do a course in people management. Find new jobs. Nobody really cares what you as a team do because the damage is done.

Thank you for feedback, which we do appreciate. It seems you have been experiencing lots of frustration lately in your work and we understand that there may sometimes be some issues that you are not entirely happy with. We encourage an open door policy where you should be able to discuss any matters with your management, in line with our values and global leadership expectations. However, if you feel that you cannot resolve these issues, there is always the possibility for you to use the more formal procedure... Once again, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.

Cons

The area time in Ireland are at the centre point of all the reasons H&M has become such an awful place to work. They are bullies. Whenever they arrive in store the tension that comes with it is horrific for staff and management. They point out and nit-pick every single thing in store and never offer solutions to help achieve what 'they' want. They are also never on the same page which is very frustrating for us in store..one member of area team can have an opinion on something and want it changed, so it's done to their individual liking. But the following day another member could be in store and want the same thing done a different way. It's double jobbing and with the staff levels we have in store it's just unnecessary stress again for us. On numerous occasions area team members visiting the store criticise how little staff there is on the day, they see big q's at the cashdesk, busy fitting rooms and staff under a lot of pressure. But never offer to help, it's like it's above them because they work in an office now rather then a store, which doesn't really follow our 'we are one team ' value. From my own negative experiences with an area team member, I have re-thought my whole career as a manager in H&M. I am a loyal, hard working employee but that doesn't seem to matter here, as nothing is ever good enough, not even your very best. Work load and working conditions in H&M is unimaginable. It's disgraceful that one of the biggest retailers in the world won't install working air conditioning in store. Avoid this company at all costs, it is not a fun and great place to work despite what H&M say.
