Pros

Great benefits: 2 weeks PTO a year, paid holidays, sick time, tuition reimbursement They would feed you and have celebrations at various times throughout the year Coworkers were cool Sometimes generous discount Can sit (unusual for retail)

Cons

Fast pace, annoying customers, heavy workload, poor work life balance, work weekends and nights. I started about 2 years ago, they kind of just throw you out there. training is very poor. You sit in front of a computer screen for 8 hours watching videos, then they throw you into the line of fire just tell you ask questions when you need help. Customers can be rude when they don't get their way. Sales consultants think they are the only people in the company that matter so they have very little empathy for you and whatever you may be doing. You will work Saturdays, lucky to get one off a month. Other associates get special treatment shift wise. Some will work mostly morning shifts while you're stuck closing (until 10-11) three nights a week. It was doable at first for me, but as the years grew on I got tired of everything. Since the pandemic you can tell Carmax only cares about the money, telling positive tested associates not to tell coworkers and not disclosing to those who worked in close proximity. They pay was okay, but for the amount of work you do it should be higher. (Vroom pay starting at $18). You probably won't move up. You may get a lead position, but movement after that is very rare. Probably won't ever make more than $18/hour working in the business office unless you become the Business Office Manager or the assistant.

Low pay, unsafe repairs

Pros

air condition, free food, easy work

Cons

do others jobs, do unsafe repairs, leads pass defects to get cars out, glue is carmax friend. install junk yard parts even if they have been in accident, leads have favorites and will throw other under the bus if you stand up to their bullying, managers lie and have favorites, you cannot work their if you have a DUI but if your a favorite of managers they will let you stay, they order used carpets and if they do not match the same color they have paint department paint it black, alot of repair lines are canceled cause techs not want to do the work, lube techs do not change oil filters on some cars cause they are scared, majority of the cars have bent wheels but leads will say balance and move path, if you go to management with issues they pretend to care but do nothing, carmax pays the lowest to their techs in the industry, they glue boots on suspension parts instead of replacing at times. if tire has side wall damage leads tell techs to turn it inside out, wheel repairs are done very bad, often leads will tell tech to move path and if customer notices they will bring it back to let retail deal with it, managers will judge employees all the time. saw manager cut a wrong seat frame and drill holes to make it fit on current seat. air bag wiring is repaired, your told to replace one brake rotor and resurface the other to save money, i been told to shave down brake pads to make it fit in caliper by leads, managers see damage and say its fine specially if its Friday, leads will tell you to drill holes on tail lamps to drain water and glue it back, tail lamps that are broken are glued back together,

Pros

I only found the health benefits to be a pro

Cons

You are expected to do everything that would otherwise be distributed at traditional car dealerships. You are to wash cars, touch up cars, vacuum cars, sell the cars, do the pricing and paperwork, take delivery from trailers, intake paperwork, car delivery. You are asked to do far more than what you are paid hourly to do. You're brainwashed into the "CarMax way"
