Pros

The co-workers I met there.

Cons

This has been the most rigid company I have ever worked for. We are still in a Pandemic. If you are a single parent, expect to be punished for that. If daycare/schools close due to outbreaks, CarMax will not work with you and will give you points. They also pick and choose who they allow to work from home because of favoritism. I’m not allowed to work from home because I have kids but others are in the office. This has caused me to lose my place because I couldn’t work. Do you think they care? No! They stress empathy for our customers but show none to employees. This is a joke of a company. Managers also hinder your potential to move to a different department or get a promotion. BEWARE!

Pros

The overall company culture is very positive and healthy. The welcome process involves the CEO meeting each new person, which is very much appreciated. They match all employee monetary and time donation to non-profits. Also, the pay is fairly competitive for the market.

Cons

At a team level, there is a constant struggle to get work done in spite of endless meetings. After more than a year, Carmax is struggling to adapt to a telecommute model for infrastructure employees - despite making it their official policy that IT will remain remote indefinitely. They did not provide sufficient hardware (monitors, keyboard, mouse, headset) to do the job. The largest issue in my opinion is that they're forcing an AGILE work model to ongoing infrastructure work. It adds to the endless meetings and imposes arbitrary deadlines for operational work.

Don't move up

Pros

This used to be the best place. I've met some amazing people that I still talk to. It has more structure than most jobs and depending on management can make or break your departments.

Cons

The higher up managers will protect the lower managers even involved in sexual harassment and sexual assault towards employees. Even where the employees will get fired or quit and the managers will keep their job even assaulting employees on the clock and on carmax property. HR was notified and still did nothing to protect the employees left. Co-workers of mine quit due to sexual harassment and nothing was done to protect them. I would not move up or work your way up past a lead because the politics and favoritism are abhorrent. In order to move up, they want you working 10-11 hour days, come in on your days off and basically not have a work life balance.
