Decent place to work

Pros

- Starting pay is decent - Benefits are at or above market (unlimited PTO is nice) - Solid work/life balance, typically work 40 hours a week, less in summer thanks to built-in half-days on Fridays - Still allows for full remote hires, although that tide may shift in the future - Most of the technical people I've met here are skilled and smart individuals, usually CarMax does a good job hiring quality SE candidates

Cons

- Promotion progress is entirely arbitrary and based on very vague rubrics and guidelines that could easily apply to anyone or not apply depending on your subjective reading of them - Heavy emphasis on reaching broad business goals that you don't necessarily have control or even influence over - Management is fundamentally disconnected from the day-to-day by design, which leads to a disconnect on their awareness of what's going on - Performance reviews feel like they are based on surface-level perception rather than reality

Pros

Nice people and the company at least pretends to care about you

Cons

The work is hard labor, working in extreme heat, majority of time on your feet, you are timed on certain tasks and use old technology thats constantly breaking. You can be successful in all of your performance metrics and they'll hire someone over you from outside the company. Its disgusting.

Pros

You get to test drive around the lot lots of nice cars.

Cons

1. Worst pay plan in the industry. Was told by another car dealer I'd be better off staying home and collecting unemployment. You have to do 3 times the work to make 1/5 the money. 2. Horrible sales process. Tried their way and sold hardly anything. Used my sales experience and sold more but not enough to make a living. And it takes way too long to make a sale. 3. Managers play favorites when it comes to leads. 4. Managers are only interested in an "iconic sales experience" for customers rather than helping salespeople making a living. 5. Salespeople spend more time online looking for another job than working. 6. Managers have 0 sense of humor. 7. Customers are overpaying on finance rates and car prices. Look elsewhere. Cars are cheaper but some customers can't get approved elsewhere.
