Pros

10% discount and a couple of 20% discount events through the year

Cons

Absolutely ridiculous expectations that aren’t achievable and then you get in trouble for not completing what they’ve demanded you do. Stores are absolutely freezing and the only heating is in the office for the manager. Get spoken to like crap all the time and belittled in front of all the staff. Managers just sit upstairs all day and then come down and shout at everyone and then go back upstairs rather than helping out with their staff are clearly struggling. Mystery shoppers coming in all the time and expecting the store to be opening day standard which is impossible with no staff. Stupid opening times when staff have no way of getting home because the buses have stopped running. One person expected to tidy half the shop in only 1 hour and then get wrong when it’s not been done properly. Awful toxic and miserable work environment where no one is happy.

Pros

FTSE100 company Product range vs. Competition

Cons

Perhaps the worst company from a culture perspective. If you value your own mental health and sanity, avoid at all costs. If you are looking at Area Manager roles, be prepared to work 7 days a week, only having approx 1 in 8 weekends off (if you’re lucky) and being led through a what’s app group! Oh and the salary is approx £20-£30k below the market average considering the turnover and accountability you have. An Area Manager vacancy only generally appears due to two reason. Either A: the previous AM only was given several weeks to achieve 8/10 - anything less you’re out the door. Or B: an external has had an epiphany and walked! (I was B) If you are considering to apply for a store or deputy manager - be prepared to sign your life away. If your married, start looking for a divorce lawyer. You will also be expected to work around the clock to deliver the all ever subjective 8/10. As AM I was encouraged not to care if your teams are on Day off. AM’s and SM’s survive on their nerves, and fear the Dementors (mystery shoppers) visiting your stores. The Dementors are a group of failed store managers who visit stores, take photos and upload onto the what’s app group and score you out of 10 based on level of fill and standards. Anything less then 8, you have a target on your back! Let’s talk about benefits, this part will be short: Everything is statutory - nothing enhanced. Pay, shocking - at every level. Sickpay, doesn’t exist. Holiday, 28 days. Finally, Glassdoor. HR do a very good job at pushing and capturing good reviews. Usually when a colleague has been on a training session or when they are in their honeymoon period (induction). Good reviews aren’t to attract new talent, it’s to help them achieve their bonus by hitting a certain number of stars. It’s all false! B&M is great for shopping in and being a customer, but to work for, it’s horrendous. Don’t be fooled by its current success.

Pros

Not much to be fair

Cons

Asks to much of staff with no hours in store. Expect managers to give up their whole weekend to work Friday Saturday and Sunday. Low rate of pay Changes minds every other week stores can not keep up Pay minimum wage get minimum effort Chooses what day off you can have Staff morale at an all time low with all the changes with no hours,. Work life balance shocking with the amount of extra hours we do to get things done. Clocking in and out as if your in School.
