Pros

AP journalists have great ethics and there can be a really great team spirit. There is a very healthy aggressiveness in pursuit of the story.

Cons

The AP can really limit what its writers do. It can be hard to do work that falls outside basic breaking news reporting. You have to push hard to do enterprise stories.

Pros

AP is very clear about what it wants from its staffers and freelancers, which makes for crystal clear direction. Pay for freelancing can be very good. Desk editors are great at communicating when you're on deadline.

Cons

Their Elvis software is useless and way too complex, and they'd be better suited to simply go with sending stories into the desk via email. Sometimes the structure of recaps and other stories can hinder creativity.
