Good work but bad/pathetic pay

Business Outlook

Pros

Good working culture (can be bad in a very few teams). Scope to learn a lot. Technology thats at least a couple of years ahead of industry.

Cons

Pay scale is bad. Every year in all the surveys one common feedback has been that pay is bad and we aren't able to retain good talent. Still ARM relents to pay more (they promise there would be revision after every feedback ). IT Infrastructure is pathetic. If your work is based on tools such as simulators, emulators, clusters resources etc., forget about being able to be productive. At least one issue or the other every now and then with one IT infrastructure or the other. Cafeteria and Pantry -- these are jokes!! Austin and cambridge offices have pretty good Pantry and Cafeteria with decent options, bangalore pantry and cafeteria show how bad Admin team in India is! At times the milk cans resemble IRCTC tea cans

Pros

Laid back, good atmosphere, lots of smart people

Cons

Salaries are not good enough for Cambridge (just have a look at rents/property costs), not very nice offices, ARM is cheap (on everything! but getting better), there's no much wiggle space your promotion is solely in hands of your manager if he doesn't care or doesn't like you, you are stuck, no clear and transparent rules or process on getting promotion. Internal procedures are very much corpo in quite small company (if you consider divisions/groups are basically separate entities they are couple hundreds people).

Thank you for leaving a review, as well as your more than 5 years of service at ARM! Even though the headline of the review skews negative, you do recommend the company and have a positive outlook on the company :) Glassdoor ratings are based solely on employee reviews, so it's reflective of the general sentiment from employees at ARM that leave reviews, which are generally positive. That said, it's still good to have constructive feedback such as yours to see where we still have areas to improve upon. As we continue to grow, this feedback is vitally important to ensure that the work culture we have cultivated at ARM, and in turn made us successful, continues to shine! Regarding Cambridge rents/properties, this is unfortunately out of our control. Cambridge as a whole has gotten more expensive over the last few years. Salaries are comparable to others in the area, and once you factor in the bonus structure and new launch award, the total compensation package is quite competitive. The Cambridge folks are also feeling the squeeze until the Cambridge expansion project is completed, so we'll have nicer/newer offices soon! For career development, I encourage you to talk to your line manager to discuss what you can do to advance your career. If he/she truly does not care/like you, then I would encourage discussing this with your People Business Partner as well. I also encourage you to visit the ARM Talent Development page to see what training courses for additional skills are available to you. Finally, with all of the growth we are experiencing due to the Softbank acquisition, there are a lot of open roles available, so I invite you to challenge yourself to a new role at ARM! -Rick C. Pros

* Good work life balance. * Four weeks of sabbatical every four years. * Decent stock grant every year. * Chance to work on the latest ARM technology.

Cons

* Salary is significantly lower than other semiconductor companies. * Work is related to validation. There is no design or development work. * Bangalore is a remote center so your work can be taken away by folks in Cambridge at any point no matter how well you do it. * The environment for engineers is steadily deteriorating. The last few years have seen the emergence of a new culture which places more emphasis on presentations and talking rather than real engineering work. As a result, honest hard-working engineers are being sidelined and loud mouths who don't hesitate to take credit for others work are being promoted. I guess it is the result of conducting too many leadership courses at five star hotels. A lot of good engineers are leaving the company due to this but the management is least bothered because they believe engineers can be easily replaced. That might be true but good engineers cannot be easily replaced. The hiring standards are declining and the quality of new hires is pathetic.

Thanks for leaving a review. As you note, we offer a very good work life balance and benefits for all employees, including a sabbatical every four years in addition to the bonuses and stocks granted to high performing employees. When you factor in the total compensation package, including the above mentioned bonuses, RSUs, PTO in addition to the salary, we are quite competitive with the other semiconductor companies in the region. Having time off to focus and remain productive is quite valuable both for the employee and for the company. As for the work environment, we are reading the reviews from the Bangalore office here on Glassdoor as well as taking feedback we learned from the ARM Engagement survey to make working at ARM a positive one. While it won't be an overnight change, discussions are taking place with senior management both in India and Cambridge, so this is something we are committed to improving. I invite you to leave another review next year, as we would like to see how we have improved things in the ARM Bangalore office. Thanks, -Rick C.
