Pros

I had the pleasure of working for AlphaSights for several years and it's truly a wonderful place, with outstanding individuals and hard workers, where I was able to learn amazing skills that I will be able to use for the rest of my career; refining communication, negotiation, client management, team management & coaching, research and the list goes on. It's a young firm with an energetic environment and the routes to advancement are mostly accessible. I found I had quite a large degree of responsibility fairly early on and I loved the challenge. There are opportunities internationally as well, working with colleagues in the sister offices and even travelling to those sites to harmonise best practices and so on. This is truly a place where you can take on leadership, accountability and ownership of your work. You will find this level of autonomy at such a junior age to be very rare indeed. If you want to be a leader, AlphaSights is for you.

Cons

AlphaSights is a growing company so naturally there are challenges. It needs to comes to terms with the fact that they are now a mature mid-sized firm, and the layers of accountability and reporting need to be greatly improved. There is little measurement of people quality management (i.e. there is no true measurement for qualifying for a manager other than holding good in-firm relationships, and this has led to the wrong people holding those positions to the detriment of those around them). There is furthermore not such a clear path to promotion and I have seen many of my peers fail to advance not because they lacked the energy or skill, but because they were placed on the wrong team and lacked the opportunities I had by chance. The new structure that has been in place since summer 2015 has obfuscated this process even further and has led to much frustration. There is furthermore a need for a robust HR/internal communications structure that allows for clear communication between entry-level and senior management, and can steer the firm in the right areas, providing feedback and essentially pushing people to hold themselves to higher account. This is especially the case for more senior management, most of whom have profited from being one of the first employees and are now in positions of serious power due to tenure and not necessarily accomplishment. These people need as much (or more) coaching, appraisal, feedback and performance management as a young manager, which they are currently not getting. Currently there is no mechanism to adjust for mediocre performers in senior positions, and there is certainly no valve to properly express such feedback to management. To their credit, senior management also straddles too many roles - from senior account manager to office general manager, which is a huge remit including budget, recruiting, strategy, etc., and so it is not reasonable to expect people with no other commercial/business experience to fill such a demanding role. The CEOs need to bifurcate these positions and likely bring in more experienced people to lead each of the offices, and allow themselves to direct the high-level functions of strategy, finance, accounting, marketing and management.

Great Professional Education

Pros

AlphaSights is an excellent place to start a career. In my first year and a half out of college I developed a strong commercial skill-set, gained professional experience through exposure to leading corporate/investor clients, and was given enough individual responsibility to make a measurable impact on the growing business. While challenging at times, my experience led me to a great role at a F100 firm that has been my top choice since college. Specific pros include: -Education/skill development: You will have considerable exposure in the following areas: account management/development/growth, client relations, inside sales, negotiation experience, correspondence with executives, cold outreach, inside sales, meeting/exceeding stretch targets, revenue generation, etc.., as well as anecdotes to back it all up once interviewing for your next step. While these phrases might just seem like buzzwords to someone in college looking for a job, they are fundamental skills for front office jobs. -Environment: You are surrounded by young, likeminded, driven peers in the heart of New York City. The people there want to have a good time just as much as you do, and you'll be friends first, colleagues second with most everyone in the office. -Responsibility and Exposure: Out of my friends in the coveted banking, consulting, and programming jobs in NYC, it was clear that I had the most immediate responsibility in my role from the get-go. You will have a lot of responsibility and the small company size allows you to be visible to leadership and take on non-core initiatives.

Cons

-You will work hard and if there was a timesheet, it would show it. 8am - 7pm on average, with some unlucky teams consistently staying later. Weekend work / small things to take care of once you finally get home for the evening ended up chipping away at me. -While the term meritocracy gets used a lot, I have never seen a situation where someone was promoted ahead of the 24 month schedule (without prior work experience). -The industry/role got noticeably more competitive during my time there. -Associates bear the burden of mistakes made by young and inexperienced Managers.

The Worst Career Move I Ever Made

Pros

Relatively good compensation and benefits package

Cons

The Dubai office is plagued with the most toxic and childish culture of any organization I've ever worked at. + Consistently marketed as a dynamic fast-growth firm that propels the careers of young and intelligent joiners, this is total BS. The company is essentially a glorified call center wherein showing any sign of intellect is shunned, as the only thing that matters is "selling as many calls as fast as possible" + Far too many too young, incompetent managers who focus their energy on micro-managing instead of adding any value to their teams or the office + Incredibly overly competitive culture with ineffective motivation tactics like "loser of the week" and a "shameboard" + Managers and trainers channel their inability to manage their own stress levels by regularly shouting at and belittling employees who are often more qualified than they are + The role doesn't help you gain any actual marketable skills that help you grow professionally or can be used to help you find your next role In summary, you can get a better job, DO NOT work accept a role at AlphaSights if you care about your career
