“I was born in India and moved to the US when I was 6. When I came here, I worried about having an accent and not fitting in. To assimilate, I started speaking only English at home and listening to popular music here. But it was also important for me to keep the values my parents taught me, such as discipline and respect. I noticed how difficult it was for my parents working as immigrants—trying to fit in at work the same way I tried at school, but with 30+ years of experience behind them. I also noticed the privilege I had because of what they could do for us. I saw an opportunity gap and wondered, “How can we make a more equitable society?” I think this recognition informed an understanding to want to balance the playing field. This influenced career choices and pivots for me..."

Jonathan Paul, Associate Consultant #atBain “I grew up in Trinidad and Tobago, which is a tiny twin-island country in the Caribbean, next to Venezuela. After high school, I spent time as an elementary school teacher, and was then accepted to Amherst College where I studied Mathematics and Psychology. It was a novel experience going from the tropical warmth to the freezing tundra that is Massachusetts, but the US has its merits (looking at you Amazon Prime)! My path to Bain has been interesting. During a summer break in high school, my friends and I decided to create a company I thought would be revolutionary. I was going to help people solve problems. We even created Excel templates and PowerPoint presentations. At the time, I wondered why other companies hadn’t thought of this genius business strategy. Without realizing it, we created a consulting company, a very bad one with one client, but a consulting company, nonetheless..." Read Jonathan Paul's full story!

Cheila, Lead, Research and Data Services “With me what you see is what you get. I am proud of being Gay, Dominican, and a gurl with swag. My mom made sure that I always knew my worth. Rewind back to the ’90s. I came out to my mom and as open-minded, as she was, she did not take it well. The AIDS epidemic was happening and there was a lot of ignorance about gays in the press. My mom wasn’t happy, and we didn't speak for a year. Eventually, we would reconcile but at the time, I knew I needed to find and build a new support system. Going to the clubs in New York is where I found my community. I felt like a superhero walking into the clubs like I belonged. I didn’t have to hide. I love solving problems and drawing outside the lines and Bain embraces this. I incorporated my music passion by curating a few playlists for Bain events and formed a great community with the Latinx @ Bain (LATBA) and Bain’s LGBTQ group (BGLAD)."
