Univar should be a great company...

Pros

Univar is a great company to start a career. The company is involved in so much (specialties, commodities, all industries and all logistics). The challenges are numerous and there is plenty to sink your teeth in. You can learn a lot.

Cons

But when you move up in the company, you discover that the systems are broken, it is very hard to actually get things done, and there is a huge disconnect between upper management and the people that actually need to do the work. Upper management's expectation are very high, often unrealistically high. Univar has been focused on increasing gross margins. You can only push suppliers so much to give you lower prices, so Univar has chosen to cut costs. They do this by reducing Opex i.e. letting go of people, combined by letting go of low-margin business. So overall sales are down, off set by lower Opex. The stock market doesn't care, because the ratios are better. Management (SN, DJ, GF, RC etc.) try to spin this as positive, but most employees that have been there for a while are disillusioned, angry and scared to lose their job. Bonus objectives are very hard to reach, so bonuses have been disappointing. But please do check the SEC filings and you will see the bonuses the aforementioned gentlemen are able to get for themselves. It's very sad. Univar should be a fantastic company to work for. They have an extensive infrastructure - branches everywhere - (except for the antiquated UVX computer system) and very good people on the ground. They have great support from their suppliers and customers (they almost cannot get around them). But somehow, the company manages to screw it all up. For a long time I was very happy at Univar but became disillusioned along the way. The environment is just too toxic. I was sorry to leave but am very happy where I landed - as are most ex-Univar employees I still keep in touch with.

Pros

Univar offers above average salary and competitive benefits. Very talented personnel

Cons

Top down culture with decision making authority consolidated in 4 senior leaders. Narcissistic personality traits run rampant with these leaders, 3 of whom have no chemical distribution experience. The focus has been to centralize management of functional groups, and to organize the business in a manner similar to that of chemical manufacturers. This has left GM's with little impact on local competitive requirements, and driven an exodus among experienced talent. Company hires great talent, mostly from outside of the industry, however Univar lacks strong training processes. The culture is extremely negative, due to repeated lay-offs. Negative sales growth for three years running has left supplier partners concerned with Univar's strategic direction. I would NOT recommend this company to any associates in the industry

Pros

Great technology and tools for the Salesforce to use. Extensive product line. Excellent geographic coverage.

Cons

Managers for the most part are lazy and out of touch, some are downright unethical. Don't believe the opportunity for "unlimited earning potential" via uncapped annual bonuses. They will change the growth goal target mid year if they feel they are paying/ will have to pay the sales staff too much in bonuses. This is flat out taking away money that you have earned! You have to fight every bit of the way to get what you are owed. Benefits have been cut also to the point of making them practically worthless.
