Pros

I did learn a lot working for Tesco, but I was lucky enough to be put on certain departments throughout my time there that had their own unique skill sets to learn. There’s always overtime available if you need it. If you work in a big store there’s bound to be people you get on well with. Pay is alright, discount is a bonus and extra benefits sometimes. Canteen is incredibly cheap and can be tasty depending on which cook is on. Free parking.

Cons

Management can be absolutely awful. A lot of power trips and not many people skills. You’ll never get time off over Christmas and Easter if you’re full time. You can be bullied into doing shifts you don’t want to do. You can be thrown into the deep end if you’re not a quick learner you may struggle. If they bring in right hours right place… you’re screwed, you can have your whole work life balance messed up or you’ll have to quit. Only 1 in 100 customers will treat you with human decency. There’s normally not enough equipment to go around to do your job. Computer systems are very outdated. If you don’t want to be a manager learn what you can and leave. It’s an easy place to get stuck. Mental health awareness is not usually a priority. Managers can be incredibly clicky and rude and there’s not much you can do about it, union staff try and help but to be honest they have no real power and are pretty useless and if you use them you’ll just get alienated even more.

Pros

Shifts can be fun (depending on who you're working with!). Early shifts are great if you can get up at that time, I used to love being home before 1:30pm, especially during Summer!

Cons

I'll preface by saying the big boss was genuinely great, always helping on the shop floor and would always speak to you like a normal person, just a really nice guy! Middle management were another thing entirely. They didn't treat you as an employee - more like a naughty school child. Mega power trips. Understaffed and overworked a lot of the time, especially during summer. It was often impossible to put out half the food in the back, even if we didn't take a break. Weird rules around breaks too - you can't take it in the last hour before you leave, even if you haven't had a chance to take one yet, so lots of shifts we just...didn't take a break. If you told management, they'd just say it was your responsibility to fit it in. During Summer/Christmas periods when there was no time in the morning (because more food deliveries, and it all has to be on shelves by a certain time) you'd struggle to get one. And don't get ill, ever! If you do, expect to be guilt tripped to the eyeballs by your manager, or asked to find your own replacement for your shift. It's a hard slog, lots of lifting / dragging heavy cages etc. I would never go back, I still get chills when I do my weekly shop! If it's for a few months to fill a gap, go for it, but don't take it too seriously.

Pros

Lots of opportunity for overtime Staff discount and free food (unsold and about to go off) Colleagues Good breaks and pay

Cons

Starting to head in the same direction as Aldi in terms of staffing - using the least amount of people for the most amount of work, leaves staff burnt out and overworked Has had some stupid policies that have made no sense My particular store had very poor rota management Lack of security personnel on late night shifts
