Pros

Your fellow coworkers are amazing and depending on the location you’re in your shift supervisor are really understanding. Good for a college student looking for extra cash.

Cons

Management is really strict on budgets and overtime. One day they’ll be asking you to stay late because they are shot staffed, the next they will cut your hours in half without even telling you. There also isn’t any way to promote up past senior shift supervisor

Pros

I’ve been working as a custodian with Sodexo for a while now, and overall, it’s been a solid job. It’s not glamorous work, but it’s dependable, structured, and there’s something satisfying about seeing a place clean and ready when you’re done. The good parts: One of the biggest positives is the job stability. There’s always work to do, and Sodexo has contracts with schools, hospitals, and other big facilities, so you rarely have to worry about hours being cut. The benefits are decent too — health insurance, paid time off, and a retirement plan if you stay on long enough. I also like that the job is pretty independent. Once you know your routine and what’s expected, you can just put your headphones in and get into a rhythm. Management tends to give you space as long as you get your work done. The company also offers chances to move up if you’re consistent — I’ve seen coworkers become leads or supervisors.

Cons

That said, the work can definitely be physically demanding. You’re on your feet most of the shift, lifting, bending, and cleaning nonstop. It’s not easy work, and sometimes it feels like people don’t realize how much effort it takes to keep everything spotless. The pay could be better, especially considering the amount of physical labor involved. Some shifts are early mornings or late nights depending on the building, which can make it tough to balance life outside of work. It can also get repetitive, doing the same routes and tasks every day. Another downside is that you’re around cleaning chemicals and sometimes unpleasant messes, especially in certain environments like hospitals or cafeterias. Safety gear helps, but it’s something you just get used to over time.
