Pros

Friendly environment. New offices in Chalfont St. Peter

Cons

High stuff turnover (people leave the company as soon as they understand how it works. The company does nothing to keep them, instead they find some replacement or no one at all. At the end, the workflow is so big that deadlines are not met and clients complain). Tedious jobs. Low salary (impossible to afford living in the area). Zero opportunities to advance or progress (especially if you are not from the area). Backwards way of thinking (RWS still works like they did twenty years ago, everything is on paper). Language skills are not required for some jobs (project managers dealing with German clients and not speaking a word of German, they use Google Translate instead). Management not approachable. Lack of communication between departments (no one knows what people from other departments are doing). Almost no training. RWS pays overtime because it’s the only way to make people stay and work extra hours. If mistakes are made, management will find a way to blame those in lower positions. They will never acknowledge someone with potential/skills. Translators are not real translators, just people with a degree in Engineering, Biology… and a basic knowledge of English. Employees feel undervalued. Management don’t really seem to care about employee happiness. Emphasis on negative feedback rather than positive. Need a car to get there and then there’s limited parking. Difficult to find somewhere to live in the are (very expensive in terms of cost of living). Stress is a real issue (people crying every time due to the amount of work). Lacks innovation and professionalism.

Pros

Ability to work from home

Cons

This is by far the worst company I have ever worked for. The pay is laughable for the talent and work expected from employees and there is no consistency in pay between equal level employees, causing multiple people to question whether discrimination is a factor. There is no transparency in pay scales or levels, which increases the ease at which the company can undercut employees. There is a massive gaslighting nature at the company, competant and hard-working employees will be routinely berated in order that they do not see their value and remain being overworked and over stressed. This tactic is also used to keep people on a stagnant salary that does not even keep up (nowhere near) with inflationary increases. The gaslighting is by far the worst thing about working at this company, however, that in itself could be an entire review, so I will move on. Every single colleague I have had whilst working at the company has opened up at some point about the negative impact the company and management style has on their mental health, myself included, and it was sad to see talented people so disheartened. The micromanagement here is ridiculous. Linguists are constantly held up against KPIs and every task undertaken is logged against time, words per hour etc. It well reflects the companies attitude towards staff - lack in trust in our abilities and self motivation, faceless resouces to be exhausted for maximum profit margins. Overtime is not compensated and regularly necessary. Overall mentality and spirit is low on account of poor working conditions. I would not recommend this employment to anyone. If there is any other way to break into the language industry, try that first!

Pros

Flexible working does work for us with children

Cons

The company is crumbling from the bottom up. Management decisions are affecting the bulk of the employees without consultation from the actual workers. People have had enough, this company don't care one iota about their staff. The support functions are being stripped away and it's only a matter of time before this feeds upwards to operations and sales staff. Beyond the point of help at this point.
