Pros

- Stable job - People are generally very friendly and helpful - Ok benefits (pension and healthcare schemes) - Good social events - Good first job for graduates

Cons

- Management is not approachable and doesn't know how to communicate with employees - Lack of progression (this is huge in the checking department and usually the company loses good employees because of that) - Always the same people getting promoted (and generally they are friends with their managers) - Bad/lack of communication (some managers just don’t talk to their team and, as a result, often people feel discouraged, lost, like no one even cares about them… is that how you want to nurture relationships and keep employees for a long time?) - Low salary and, if that wasn't enough, there is also a low salary increase annually, which means the people that have been working there for a longer period of time get paid almost the same as the people just starting in the company - It's almost impossible to get a translator position (the company is looking for specialists in some areas and funds courses to some in-house people, you just have to be English or German as the rest of the languages don't seem to exist and, believe me, they need more in-house translators in some languages as the freelancers they work with are usually unreliable) - Lack of organisation that leads to client complaints and promotes a “blaming culture” - No positive feedback, priority given to negative feedback instead. There is a general lack of appreciation for employees.

Pros

You can gain a lot of experience quickly because you will be needed for the job. In the US, the pay is comparable to other translation companies and the benefits are actually very good with a lot of vacation days from the beginning. This is a good starting point for someone wanting to gain experience in project management.

Cons

The company refuses to hire enough people to do the job and there is a high turnover. They are extremely focused on profits and probably prefer to hire someone new rather than pay the salary of an experienced person. If you aren't working constantly every second of the day, they will find something for you to do and probably put you on helping another team. There is usually no time for breaks and overtime is expected. Lots of experienced people have been lost due to limited job growth opportunities and poor work/life balance. Getting a promotion is a case of being in the right place at the right time and often ends up being the same role with added responsibilities for not much more pay. This causes the team to be made up almost entirely of new hires who cannot do the job and the few experienced members are left to pick up the slack. They will move you to a different team without any regard of training or understanding of the new job role you have been put into. They only care about the profits of that team. The job roles are not well defined and the project management model has not been well executed. Mostly, people are just scrambling to get the work done by any means possible with little support. The IT side of the job is extremely inefficient, usually leading to using several tools in order to track a project and get the work done. Updating one entry means that several others must also be updated manually. It is an admin nightmare and things are constantly being forgotten. The admin takes up more time than getting the job done in most cases. They hold a lot of meetings regarding how to handle stress, but the stress is caused by RWS themselves. If they really cared about their employees, they would make sure the team is well balanced and supported before experienced people quit for preventable reasons. There are a lot of secrets and gossiping going on behind closed doors. It's hard to tell anyone's true intentions or to trust them. Bringing up true emotions can cause unwanted and unnecessary drama, so it's usually best that you stay quiet. The yearly bonus is very small and should not be considered when applying. The greed of the company doesn't allow it to give back to its employees that put their sweat and blood into earning this money.
