Pros

Ethical, conservative, and stable company that devotes much time and money into training, developing new talent. Great place to start a career or to stay for life. Many people in the company have worked their entire careers at PPG , but have worked in a variety of business units.

Cons

May be difficult to transition between business units, compensation is less than satisfactory, seems to be difficult to move up in the company through the sales side. Operations pays off faster for upward mobility.

Pros

Very easy job, good safety record, clean factories. Has its ups and downs with the economy but if you are a solid worker you stick around. International exposure.

Cons

Complete lack of career advancement opportunity for all but a very few chosen ones. Lack of challenge / boredom. Increasing use of outsourcing and contract workers, or directing work volume to foreign countries with their own local staff in place. It's a good place if you just want a job but a frustrating place if you want a career, so you have to manage your expectations.

Pros

Hours are OK most of the time. People are generally reasonable and responsive; not as crazy as at some other places I've worked. Good vacation policies (4 weeks) and you get to take them with little or grief given. Some opportunity to work from home or out of the office, especially as you move up the ladder and if your presence in the office isn't physically necessary.

Cons

Place is so big and constantly reorganizing with seemingly little rhyme or reason. The bureacracy often gets in the way of the job, but rarely helps when it should, as when a senior person breaks the "rules" s/he gets no grief and, in fact, gets to complain about lack of initiative, etc. If lower level person tries to exercise some initiative, often is beaten down.
