Pros

A very diverse and fair employer Flexible working Great pension Plentiful annual leave entitlement

Cons

Hierarchies are confusing and this often results in poor communication between departments External factors such as funding and increased elderly population are pitting pressure on the NHS. Non-clinical employees face job insecurity with ever increasing workloads.

Pros

Reasonable pay and pension - if you can stick it out all your life! Friendly staff, good team work, bigger hospitals still got access to things like physiotherapy and counselling Some places are still good for training (but they're becoming rarer and rarer as staffing levels are plummeting)

Cons

Crappy compulsory shifts (13 hour nights), understaffed and no paid overtime available anymore, no training due to understaffing, very rare that top management interacts with staff at frontline or asks views at worker's level; no flexibility in working hours at all or when to take holidays if you're in a smaller hospital

Increasing pressure

Pros

Job security - not many people are made redundant. Holiday allowance is decent. You get sick pay. Most colleagues are hard working.

Cons

Increasing pressure on staff in certain areas. Usually poor management. Downgrading of staff duties due to lack of funding meaning you work harder and are told to do jobs that previously were performed by a higher band. No job progression or promotion available due to staffing cuts and lack of funding. No training opportunities or investment in staff. Sickness levels are high in some areas due to stress. Pension reforms linking NHS pension age to the state pension age. Minimal additional re-numeration when working unsociable hours.
