Pros

The best reasons are that KPMG provides a good environment for individuals who like to excel and be challenged. The learning curve is steep and constant, and there is a wealth of knowledge on the internal website and numerous trainings to enhance one's skills. Sometimes the pace is rapid and you really learn to prioritize and multi-task. You will definitely learn people and project management skills with ample of opportunity to practice to become a better leader. There is also a lot of flexibility, as long as you get your job done by the deadlines, you can take time off to take care of errands, not to mention using up the 25 days of PTO. There are also a number of activities you can attend, ranging from socials (pub nights, lunches, breakfasts, dinners, sports teams), professional development workshops (internally and with outside organizations), to cultural events. Best of all, most of the events are sponsored by the company.

Cons

KPMG is definitely a challenging place to work, in terms of the technical accounting and audit knowledge required, as well as one's ability to deal with low performing staff and difficult clients. During busy season (typically Jan-Apr of each year), you may work very long hours due to reporting deadlines. The pace is also rapid and stress levels can build up high, some people have a hard time producing results at the rapid pace and get really stressed out. You will work with other team members, thus, the success of your work is dependent on how well other do, thus, dealing with staff members that are not competent will require more work from you. Other times, clients can be difficult, thus making it hard for you to get your job done.

Pros

KPMG is a worldwide brand and offers opportunities to pursue many different career paths. The umbrella of services is categorized as follows: Audit/Advisory/Tax. Personally I am in International Tax. Specifically, KPMG offers many opportunities to grow by providing opportunities for international rotations, ease of lateral movements to the other service areas such as advisory and audit. KPMG leadership always keeps us abreast of industry news that affect our services, keeps an open line of communication to senior level executives and encourages us to think outside the box and provides many avenues and trainings for professional development.

Cons

Employees at KPMG are highly knowledgeable and very hard working. Job demands as it relates to tax are very high. The regular work hours are usually 8:30-6 or 7 PM even during off-peak seasons. Everyone works hard and has extremely high expectations but managers are fair and reasonable with work load. The point being if you are looking for an 8-5, this may not be the right place for you. However, if you are committed and dedicated to work as hard as required you can guarantee you will be rewarded fairly in regards to compensation and bonuses. During busy season Jan-April 15th, I have worked 830-12 AM for 4 weeks in a row. Saturdays are mandatory during busy season and usually require 6-8 hours of work.

Pros

You learn a lot and very quickly. In one year with KPMG, you learn what it takes maybe 1.5 times the time in another work environment. You generally work with young energetic people, and you get to interact with senior level management at client sites. You also get to move around a lot (i.e. you get to travel and work out of different locations). Ther eis a good amount of time off (6 weeks); the starting salary at KPMG (consistent with the Big 4) is higher than in other places. You also get to work independently. After the work is done, also KPMG parties hard, which is fun (work hard, play harder atmoshopher).

Cons

The hours can be terrible, but it completely depends on the client you get placed on. Some peoplework a lot more than others, and there is very little recognition between those people. Sure, there are ratings (exceptional performer, vs standard performer), but aside from that, there is a very simal compensation differentiation. Also, you are managed by people who are one year your senior. You could get lucky to work with people who are good, but there is an equal change to work with your seniors who are terrible managers. And, these people, one year your senior, have the power to make your life at KPMG good or terrible. All of your extra effort or lack thereof is seen by your senior but rarely by the executives by the company, so it doesn't pay to put so much effort. The culture assumes that long hours are normal. Someone makes a budget of how many hours something should take, and you have to explain why you went above/below that budget which you didn't really agree with to begin with. THere is pressure to understate hours. Seniors also send you to discuss/argue points with client executives that you don't understand. And you just end up getting yelled at and hated by the client.
