Pros

There are a number of reasons why IBM can be a great fit for you. Most importantly, the company encourages a healthy work/life balance. Time off is abundant, and the hours are not rigorous. In addition the company treats many employees as "mobile" workers -- working from home or working out of an office as needed. Also, since the company is so large, there are a number of perks and benefits. So, if you are interested in a relaxed work-environment and lots of flexibility, this is a great option. Also, the IBM name on a resume is a great asset.

Cons

IBM does have some challenges, and is not an optimal choice for all. Since the "mobile employee" concept is enforced for many groups, it becomes challenging to develop a sense of teamwork or camaraderie. There notion of the office "water cooler" is non-existent. One might argue that such "off the record" interaction does not necessarily contribute to productivity -- the issue is that inter-personal, informal interaction is limited. The other challenge is one that many large companies will face -- different groups are often incentivized in different manners. It is not uncommon to have internal groups encouraged (and rewarded) to operate along divergent paths. Lastly, you will come across an arrogance at IBM -- that "Big Blue" is infallible.

Pros

Flexibility is the key, I do what I want, when i want, I head in late, and I leave early. As long as I get my work done, no one says anything to me. It's almost like working for your own company that is barely struggling along. The people are great too, and if it weren't for them IBM would have a HUGE problem retaining people.

Cons

PAY SUCKS, don't come here to be rich, or even decently paid. Even when told you are doing well, you will not get rewarded. No stories of great raises/bonuses/stock options. Just keep your head down, and work,

Pros

IBM is a large company with many opportunities to have and hold many different positions through a long career. Opportunities from manufacturing to sales and everything in between exist. Services, technical, admin, staff, teaching, HR, sales, graphic design, TV and Video production, food service, etc. There are few companies where you can have this kind of exposure to many different positions. Large companies offer more stability, excellent benefits, and a diverse work environment.

Cons

It's a big company. It's easy to get lost. Salary growth can be stagnant. Without establishing a network at the company, you will get lost. Many IBM workers are mobile workers and a sense of community can be lost if you aren't active in establishing it for yourself. This isn't the IBM of 25 years ago where Respect for the Individual was paramount and employee loyalty fueled its success. Lifelong employment at IBM is no longer guaranteed no matter how hard you work.
