Pros

- Big company allows one to experience vast range of products and technologies - Great training in product development process - Opportunities for professional development such as six-sigma - Wonderful analytical sciences division with all the latest and greatest instrumentation (though everyone is overworked) - Researchers from other departments are willing to help even if they don't know you

Cons

- Lower than average industry salary, does not take into account the cost of living in PA w.r.t HQ in MI The following are for the Adhesive and Functional Material Business (not for broader Dow organization), - Science is almost entirely about trial and error, instead of rigorous application of scientific method. You don't need a PhD to do the kind of work most scientists do - Most projects are minor improvements type - Lack of foresight and courage to pursue innovative research and product ideas - Favoritism and politics in the group even at very low level - Deserving candidates don't get recognized or promoted - Some blatantly took credit for someone else's work - Incompetent management - my manager specifically had utterly inadequate scientific and management aptitude - Don't assign dedicated technicians to all PhDs - Management changes every two years as people hop around within the company, as a result managers don't pursue long term efforts that are necessary for a thriving research organization - Frequent restructuring usually resulting in no tangible benefit

Pros

Dow has locations primarily in Louisiana and Texas, but there are a lot of places you can work for Dow. Dow has a lot of variety in the types of positions available. There are some nice opportunities to move up and the plants have a safe culture.

Cons

Businesses that "make more money" than others get a lot of extra perks and also get extra resources from other "seemingly less important" businesses within the company (which are the ones that make less or no money). If you work for the "seemingly less important" businesses, you may find yourself frustrated about a and important instrument that has had a work order in for 6 weeks while your all-star planner and I&E technician have been leveraged out to other "more important" plants. Business is business, but the company does even try to hide this divide. Also, since the Olin split and the DowDuPont merger, the company culture has grown more focused about cutting all costs, which makes sense. However, when I watched the merger video with all of the big wigs about a month after Hurricane Harvey, they mentioned what we went through for about 30 seconds, then got right into the merger stuff. They dropped it like a rock with blatant disregard. It was bad enough they waited until the last minute to call hurricane duty because of....MONEY. Unfortunately, that event has left me questioning the company's dedication to safety, in spite of how safe we actually are and do practice in the plant. Like I said earlier, business is business, but I feel like a number here.

Pros

Great Benefits. They have good Health Care, 401K, ESOP, and plenty of vacation. Work environment is usually pleasant. Fellow workers/team members are very helpful.

Cons

No training. Very poor leadership. They expect you to work 10 hrs. a day minimum. There are no backups to take the vacation they give you. Very little chance for anything other than a lateral move. They assign you Six Sigma projects on top of the incredible work load. Forced ranking sets up competition with people who are on your team.
