Pros

From outside Deezer has plenty of assets to attract candidates, at least in France : nice success story in the French tech, well-know brand, must be dynamic, data focused, high tech, in a market where there is still a lot of things to invent. And it’s about music so it’s sexy. You arrive on your first day full of energy and willing to be part of a great adventure. The reality is very different and you will progressively understand that you got it all wrong. The good thing about Deezer ? The people who work there are super friendly, self-motivated and actually trying to achieve things. Great offices in Paris. You hear music and about music all the time.

Cons

No strategy. No vision. A CEO that tells you that there is no need for a vision. Lot of money spent for no results. Most decisions by the top-management are made without looking at and understanding what has been done before, without using data properly, without getting insights from people who work there, and in a very authoritarian way. Actually, the management style is closer to the one from massive corporation in the 50s but has nothing to do in the tech world. Being motivated, dedicated to the job, willing to move forward are not values that are important in that company. Being good at your job, having good performance review and reaching your targets are not that important either. So you’d better stop know because you will just make yourself tired and unhappy. Instead you just need to talk a lot about all the things you are going to do, even if you do nothing that is not a problem, try to get more power by stealing the scope of your colleagues, try to be friends with the "right" people. While you’re working there you are seriouly spending your time not understanding most of the things that are happening and wondering how such a great story with all those great people has turned into such a messy and frustrating environment. That is probably the most impressive achievement so far.

Don't waste your time, it isn't worth it

Pros

- Working with nice and talented people, even if they're now an endangered species - It can be an interesting company for very junior positions (don't stay there more than 2 years though)

Cons

- An entire team got suddenly fired for "strategic reasons" in 2016. Nobody ever understood why. They hired a new team abroad, partly made of friends of some top managers. - Lots of people are hired because they're a friend or a friend of a friend. - Only short term decisions are made. - The top management doesn't use / understand the product. It leads to broken business decisions. - There is absolutely zero consensus. The top managers and the CEO are in their Ivory towers, only making decisions by themselves, thinking they are right about everything. Some of them even have assistants printing their emails for them (interesting behavior for people working in the digital field by the way). - No transparency at all. It's all about lies - Some people in the HR support crazy decisions the top managers make about their employees instead of supporting their own workforce. - Too much politics - Top management order some teams to hire interns because they're - At Deezer, you are not considered as someone; you are just something.

Pros

Work in music could be great. You have "Deezer sessions" in the same building where you can watch great artists, you are surrounded by music, so it's a nice industry. Deezer has a big website and it's a known brand. People are nice, the place is awesome (garden, large kitchen, and many paintings on walls). Developpers ship features every week, it's product-oriented.

Cons

Deezer is a big company. Many many things are wrong in their codebase but you are not allowed to fix this. You have to ship features, not maintain or increment quality of codebase. Maybe someone higher in hierarchy will allow you to make something. It takes about 2-3 weeks, because, you know, XXX is not sure about this. Yes XXX is not a developer, but you know, he's the boss. Deezer has same problems as big company. Developper are not there to enhance quality or think their codebase, they are here to ship features. When I worked there, the codebase was ugly. 3 functions for the same thing, no micro-service, ... And you can't do anything about this, Deezer is in an industry where they need to ship features against company like Microsoft, Apple or Spotify. No time for quality. That's a choice, but it wasn't mine.
