Disgrace of the payment industry

Pros

It’s a get-rich quick scheme for sons of rich fathers with no real education or poor career prospects. Just weasel your way to the (not so bright) CEO and you are set for life!

Cons

Where to start? - The Boys Club are not only arrogant and ill-mannered but quite frankly are simply dumb. - The CEO got lucky by hiring smart people at the beginning (all of whom have now left the company) but somehow continues to believe that he is behind the company’s short lived success (which dates back to 3 years ago). - The Boys club is a pathetic gathering of sycophants placed in different geographies mostly to boost their fragile egos and to act as management spies. In reality, these “elite” performers would not find any job at any decent payment company (which is why they are still at CKO after 6,7,8 years). This rag tag ensemble of misfits are supported by a middle management that has completely sold out all their values and are holding on for whatever crumbs are thrown their way. All in all it’s a pathetic company run by pathetic men and enabled by pathetic supposed leaders.

Disappointing Culture and Lack of Empathy

Pros

Mondays and Friday work from home Good tech stack

Cons

Regrettably, my experience with the company's culture has been disappointing. There seems to be a disconnect between the top management and the rest of the staff. Layoffs have become a distressingly common occurrence, often transpiring without prior warning. Additionally, the lack of empathy displayed by management during these difficult times is concerning. Comments such as 'the layoffs are beneficial for the company' are not only insensitive but also disregard the impact on employees, especially when layoffs coincide with significant holidays like Christmas in 2023. This disregard for the personal lives of employees, many of whom have families and children, is disheartening. Moreover, it's disheartening to note that such comments from top management are considered normal, as they interact with employees who are primarily concerned about trivial matters like the consistency of the free lunch offerings. It's profoundly sad to witness individuals in their 40s and above showing more interest in the lunch menu mere days after witnessing the departure of their colleagues. This stark lack of empathy and perspective only adds to the toxic atmosphere within the workplace, contributing to a pervasive sense of demotivation among employees.

Pros

- Free lunch - Decent pay - Some good people (but running out fast)

Cons

An awful, awful place to work. Companies really show their true colours when things go badly and Checkout is in a death spiral. There is a revolving door of execs (10 in 18 months and counting!! 😂). Each new appointment weaker than the last, along with knee jerk changes in strategy every time. After the latest "shake up" nobody knows what anybody is or should be working on. Rumours spread faster than the truth, breeding a toxic working environment. The people who rise to the top do so by undermining others - individualism and ladder climbing is rewarded over collaboration. Questioning the direction is not permitted. One of our new "Operating principles" is Talk Straight, yet anonymous questions are banned. No one in the organisation would dare ask an uncomfortable question without that protection (those that do are swiftly and quietly exited) and Q&As have become meaningless as a result.
