Pros

Staff are friendly, professional, and courteous. The headquarter offices are spacious and parking is ample.

Cons

I do not recommend working here if you are a millennial, in your 20's or 30's. Particularly in the marketing, communication, and PR field, you will not grow your skillset and you will not be given any tools or opportunities to grow your career. Management has a stronghold on mid- to senior- level positions and upward mobility is virtually nonexistent. Managers are often promoted to Directors while lower-level employees are not given opportunities for promotions. Everything is outsourced to India and the Philippines. If there's something you would like to do, chances are someone in another country is doing it for less. Pay raises are 1-3% so don't come in underpaid. You will not be compensated or given a raise regardless of your contributions, work level, education, etc. Bonuses at the corporate level are almost not worth mentioning. There is no work life balance. 55+ hour weeks were the norm. Unrealistic time management expectations i.e., 8 and 9 pm email requests. Montreal, Canada HQ is king while the US is the red headed step child. Telework policy fluctuates to align with industry trends. Management is lenient on some and strict on others. Health insurance consists of a high deductible plan with regular out-of-pocket increases each year, all of which fall on the employee. Benefits are lackluster and days off are far and few in between.

Good company but don't expect job security

Pros

CGI is a growing company with interesting projects and most groups (but not all) are good to work in. They put a lot of energy into creating a good culture and corporate accountability, although this is not pushed into all groups very effectively.

Cons

I can't speak to all parts of CGI globally, but in the US, people are treated as disposable. Some groups are very dysfunctional and it's tough to get management or HR attention to fix the issues. Also, in the US, the bench policy is only 3 weeks so if you end up without a project, you have a very short timeline to find one. If you don't find one within that period, you're fired, no matter how many years you have been with the company. I have seen 20+ year veterans land on the bench and get terminated - and there's nothing that their manager can even do about it. They don't even lay you off with an option to come back when there is work - they just fire you. There is no mandate to prefer internal candidates, so even if you're a high performer with great skills, if you're too expensive or not exactly the right fit for a project (even if you could do the job), the hiring project doesn't have to take you. This is a waste of talent when they are hiring with one hand and letting good people go with the other. It's tough to say it's a good company when there is so little loyalty to their long-term employees.

Poor Place to Work

Pros

Some of the people I work with are nice. There are some that keep to themselves which is fine also. There are some people who clearly know what is going on but won't share. My view is nice.

Cons

So many people are leaving. Many people who left worked here from the beginning and now things are just different. Since the company was purchased, everything seemed to flip upside down. We don't do anything as a team anymore. It's very independent work and we don't learn new things. We are stuck on a project, the project ends, we then get terminated. Luckily some people did come back but that was only QA. I'm not sure how that will affect me in my role. And what is the deal with our new manager? He was going to move here but now isn't. He is renting an apartment that is furnished, so he didn't even bring any personal stuff along. I'm not a corporate business person but that doesn't scream permanent to me. I've heard for a long time that the place is closing. At first I didn't believe it but it's hard not to. They told us we were moving, got everyone all up in a panic but yet we didn't move. They took away all our perks, bonuses, fun events to keep us together as a group. They said this social club the company has would be the same but it's not. They want us to pay to be in it. Seems odd that what we once had for free we are now paying for and they call it a perk. I don't know. All these changes are just very upsetting to me. We used to be USA all the way. Now we are Canada and it seems we will always be that 'other' country and not have the same opportunities as the others. Is it true that local people applied for the site manager job? Why weren't they selected since they know us and they know the community. The guy they sent is from Alabama. He doesn't know me and never will. It would be nice to have the community know who we are like it used to be.
