Once given a tenured position, you have job security. The environment is very suitable for individuals who think that research is organized and directed from the top down.
Cons
The hierarchical (army-style) organisation, with top down ''management'' of research means that people who will succeed are those with a sergeant mentality. Also, decisions must never be taken by those involved but from higher up, and reach the staff as orders through the hierarchical route. So much power in this hierarchical systems means that colleagues will happily stab you in the back if it allows them to climb faster.
