AP is not the place it used to be.

Pros

AP is globally known, so there is a lot of prestige and recognition on the outside. Industry-wide, the salaries are excellent unless you live in a major city such as New York. The benefits are excellent and to a certain extent make up for the salaries. You're probably best off living somewhere else.

Cons

Long hours and overnights. Also, the instability of the news media and recent layoffs make it a less pleasant place to work.

Only good if you're working on news

Pros

Good benefits packages including 401K, inexpensive medical packages. Kind coworkers across the US, easily accessible by AP communication systems. Good support for people who have work related disabilites

Cons

If you are not covered by the news unions, there are little to no raises each year. You are rewarded by being given more work, without any extra compensation or time off. It can be hard to get straight answers from people, and you are usually bounced around from person to person. People don't want to be held accountable for the information that they give. Very difficult to advance in the organization. Business model has been wavering during the past two years. This has created a lot of tension between customers and the AP.

Pros

Prestigious brand, and an excellent journalistic talent, as well as a basketball court and a full gym in the office.

Cons

There are some gaps in management quality in the middle management area of the AP, and there are many questions about its economic health.
