Pros

At Abbott, there are lots of opportunities and it easy to move between areas if you are willing to network. The benefits are good (healthcare, 401k, on-site fitness center, Clara Abbott organization offers classes such as financial management). It is easy to achieve a good work-life balance.

Cons

Abbott loses many good people because it does not provide opportunities and salary for those that deserve it. The company is slow to change. There are significant culture and resource differences depending on the group you work for.

Pros

Abbott has a long history of providing quality pharmaceuticals and medical products. I have always believed that I am selling the best product in my market, which makes it much easier to sell. Abbott takes a very conservative approach to promotion and interpretation of PHARMA guidelines. We are given a lot of training on appropriate promotion. Abbott provides some benefits that many companies don't, like a pension plan and profit sharing in addition to a 401K. When my personal circumstances have required me to move Abbott has always found me a job in my new hometown. Abbott also does a great job of keeping employees even when drugs go generic or sales forces get downsized. I don't know anyone who's actually been laid off from Abbott, they always get placed in a new position. So overall, great benefits, job security and a great products to sell. That's why I've been with Abbott so long.

Cons

Abbott's technology is sometimes outdated by the time it gets rolled out to the field. Implementing new systems is slow, and some of the current systems were never any good (like OMEGA, the sample management portal). Some things that seem like simple fixes are never going to get changed because someone's pride or their entire career is entwined with a certain software program or report. Abbott is conservative with buying new data or new technology.

Pros

You have a lot of freedom @ Abbott Nutrition. It's your territory and you can run as you see fit. However, with that responsibility comes accountability. Your customers give you a lot of freedom as well. Since you're sampling something they want (baby formula), and you're not required to get a physicians signature, you can pretty much come and go as you please. No unnecessary waiting in the waiting room.

Cons

Your results are hard to qauntify. You're performance is measured by a "Mother's Survey." Mothers are surveyed on what formula their baby used and your market share is derived from that survey. Your market share in part determines your bonus. There is a retail sales component to your bonus as well and it's only paid out three times a year.
