Pros

Good benefits, stable job, interesting business problems to solve. Awesome healthcare tech products.

Cons

This was the worst software engineering job I've ever had. The reason came down to basically the worst management I've ever worked with. I have no doubt that there are other teams at this company with other managers that are great. I probably would have given 4-5 stars if I had worked on those teams. My manager's words didn't back up his actions. A shockingly immature software engineering culture was fostered despite the fact that the product we were working on was a world-class healthcare product being used in dozens of countries by millions of people. My manager was manipulative and twisted my words to seemingly always put me in a negative light. I never got decent work to do despite there being tons of opportunity that matched my skills and experience. My skills and experience were majorly overlooked and underutilized. The final straw was that despite my manager saying to me personally that I was "brilliant" and technically skilled I was threatened with a performance improvement plan. I asked my manager "Why?". My manager gave no legitimate reason. After pressing him further over several meetings I came away with the major feedback item being that I needed to format my JIRA ticket titles in a different way (which I did over the coming weeks, but is this a good reason for PIP-ing somebody?). My manager was demoted and his replacement came in and again threatened me with a performance improvement plan. I asked "why?" and he literally said. "I don't know. I was told that this was happening so I'm continuing it. Let me get back to you on that". For these reasons I left Abbott and got a promotion and pay raise in the process.

Pros

In the beginning, the job was good despite several red flags.

Cons

It went from no management to the worse manager I've ever had as a scientist for over 20 years. I was verbally harassed on group calls by other senior staff and nothing was done about it, not even an apology. Micro-managed and no respect for myself or my family during the pandemic as everyone on my team was able to work from home but me, with a newborn baby at home. Definitely one of the worse jobs I've ever had. Don't ignore the red flags! You've been warned!

Not a positive experience

Pros

The only positive: Large, well-known company.

Cons

1. The compensation rates are intentionally low and if you were to get a promotion, they will give you the lowest possible amount. 2. If you're underpaid but you don't meet 3 specific criteria (all 3) then you are not eligible for a pay increase. 3. Leadership does not resolve issues when presented with them. Employees are blamed for "causing drama" 4. They can and will transfer team members to a new manager for no reason with no notice. You have no say in your fate with the company or the structure. 5. There is an extreme amount of pressure to perform above job responsibilities for no payoff or increase in compensation it is just what you're expected to do. The company culture is the worst I have ever experienced. 6. internal career progression is not as easy as you might think. They tell you that you have endless opportunities but that is simply not true. 7. They operate like a finance company, they give very little to their employees so don't expect any "perks" like you might get with other companies. They perform bi-annual layoffs.
