"How does the bank make money?"
Anonymous
Simple right? Wrong. The Bank is a big animal. Understand that 90% of the Bank's revenues come from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Operationally, the Bank makes most of its revenue from Transactional Banking i.e. basic lending. Think of it as a pyramid with TB being the bottom layer, followed by structured lending, followed by value add (i.e. Corporate Advisory), followed by strategic client coverage. Client Coverage owns the clients and they drive the relationships. Financial Markets, Transactional Banking, Corporate Finance: these are all products that provide tailored solutions to the clients and try to find cross-sell opportunities whenever one of the products makes a deal e.g. FX.
