OK company - needs a regime change

Pros

Open atmosphere, little micromanagement and flexible hours in R&D. VMware's acquisition is starting to have a somewhat good impac .

Cons

Product Management department is filled with completely inexperienced people from support side. Company does not make money and VMware is now seeing this as well which is now resulting in cutbacks and hiring freezes across different department . They've hired a giant group of freshers straight out of school because they are cheap and they will do as they are told. Same formula was used at Manhattan Associates This is a good plan to capture good market share but horrible for product quality which shows in forms of bugs and hotfixes across all products.

Pros

Some great products which sell themselves well. I met some great talent in the business who if managed correctly would be even more productive. There are some positives I found like limited micro management but this I believe also comes down to who your manager is. You can make some good money but this is now reducing year on year. If you are in the US it feels like a very different business. You can move around much more. I liked the US leadership and they do demonstrate some great qualities but these do not make it through to EMEA.

Cons

The core management in the UK have been with the company far too long. You are told you need to be able to deal with change..the only thing that does not change is the management. With this comes little upward mobility unless you are in the "club". If you are not in the "club" your options rapidly become very limited very quickly. However you are made every year to work on a personal development plan...not sure why as there is not no place to go and the only promotions I witnessed tended to be managers being promoted with the odd sales person being promoted only in title i.e. Major or senior. Much of your time will be spent dealing with some unbelievably crazy internal processes which are often manual and for a cloud leader somewhat unbelievable that they exist given the tools on the market today. Your internal admin skills will be welcomed here and I worked with some very good internal admin people...erm I mean sales people, Targets are set every 6 months if your in sales so if you are working on that OTE big deal the likelihood is that your target will be adjusted to accommodate this therefore making hitting you number even more unrealistic. Accounts will be moved up and down and away from you so again be prepared to be irritated here and thats before the US asks for any splits. If you are going for an interview ask about attrition rates in the Enterprise Team and have them demonstrate exactly how many people actually make their quota annually...its not a high %. You will also find the hiring and interviewing process long and tedious especially when compared with their competitors.

Pros

There are very few PROs to working here. Maybe the biggest is ESPP? Not sure if this is worth the price of admission though :) You need to make enough money to afford to have money taken out of your paycheck in order to set it aside for 6 months so you can buy company stock at a 15% discount.

Cons

working in technical support does not provide a good view of this company, its policies, culture, or values. I have read wonderful things about VMware as a company, I have not experienced any wonderful things. I can attest to the fact that working in technical support would be tantamount to working in a completely different company - they do not share the same vision, values, culture and I am guessing management. I work for technical support but it is run like a call center at Comcast.
