Pros

The job is challenging and cutting edge. The benefits are good. We're given a choice to work a flexible work schedule such as 9 hour days with every other Friday off. We deal with the latest cutting edge technologies. Everyone has definite job security. There is great satisfaction in providing superior products to our those serving our country.

Cons

There is too much bureaucracy. There are times when politics can drive bad decision making and make it hard to accomplish goals. We have ridiculous funding rules compared with the private sector that can create problems with logical decisions. It takes forever to hire additional workers and we sometimes lose people because it takes HR so long to make a job offer.

Pros

Benefits, GI Bill, steady job, retirement. If you have kids and you need a insta-career to pay the bills and whatnot then you might do well in the navy. The comraderie of people going through the same crap you are makes it easier. But it's no way to accellerate your life.

Cons

Sitting around all day doing nothing at all. Standing watch, staring into space for hours. Poor leadership. The mentality of some leaders that they are running some kind of prison. The fact that you can't quit.

Pros

The Navy provides an opportunity for renewed direction and focus in ones life. For those people who haven't really put too much thought into what they want to be when they "grow up," and didn't perform up to par in their high school years, the Navy will give you guidance and exposure to a work environment that will help them decide where they want to go in life.

Cons

Aside from separation from family and familiar surroundings, there's the initial low base pay. One can get past this by evaluating the numerous benefits provided and consider the cost/value of these extras in the civilian sector.
