Pros

For someone looking to just warm a chair, do the bare minimum, and go home at 4, this is a perfect place to be. When starting, you get some decent training, depending on your career field, then either get tired of not enough work or watch YouTube/facebook all day.

Cons

This is not the place for innovators or those with a drive to achieve something every day. If you go overseas, there is always a manning shortage and a lot of work needing to be done, resulting in fulfilling work, but the stateside is a waste of taxpayer money. Civilians who have been in place for decades, more often than not, prefer nothing to do so they can be retired in a cush office outside their home. Some are great, but most are leeches on the government welfare system, the DoD.

Pros

Stability during economic crisis. No education needed to enter. You can gain a lot of practical skills to take to the civilian world.

Cons

Nobody has a clue what true leadership means. The goal is conformity, not motivation or inspiration or relationship. Hours are a NIGHTMARE. Shifts constantly change. Always 12-hr shifts. Every 4 months rotate to night shift, not to mention deployments. FORGET having a family life in maintenance. Forget having any life in maintenance. High depression rates. High suicide rates. Pay is disrespectfully low. You do a 100k+/year job for 40-50k. If you live on base, 50% of your pay is out the window because they take ALL of your housing allowance and give you TERRIBLE quarters or a TINY town-home. You can flip burgers for the Air Force or McDonalds and get paid the same as maintenance does. It is disgraceful.

Pros

The amount of opportunities are limitless. Unlike other branches the Air Force actually treats you like a human. You’re always encouraged to progress as an Airmen, professional, and as a person. Also go OFFICER, you’ll get payed way better. If you put in for the GI bill regardless of rank you’ll get $100K to go to school, or learn a trade etc you can NOT pull it out for personal consumption of materialist things/objects. It’s ONLY FOR EDUCATION. While you’re in you get practically “free” medial benefits it’s Medicare and it cost $25 a month that automation comes out of your paycheck. Lastly, you get a secrete security clearance which will help you with getting a federal job on the outside and you get Veteran preference for federal jobs when it comes time to get out of the military.

Cons

You’re always encouraged to progress which can easily lead to burnout. Furthermore, if you don’t have boundaries in terms of how much work you should be doing/how much you work you will be given additional work and duties to pick up the slack of others to accomplish the mission. You can get deployed depending on your job, you will most likely leave your state of residence and get stationed out of state. That can be a pro or a con depending on the type of person you are.
