Pros

You get the pride of knowing that you are a small percentage of the population that is trusted with the ability and training to do both terrible and great things in all corners of the globe.

Cons

You can find yourself restricted in the places you can live and jobs you can do especially as a rated flyer. Some really great opportunities have passed me by simply because the Air Force hadn't gotten its number of combat flying years out of me.

As an enlisted programmer I have a pretty close to gauranteed job even if there isn't much work.

Cons

You may not always be doing the job you signed up for. Of course this is not true if you are a govt. contractor or Civil Service employee

Job Security is the primary reason to work for the Federal Government. Secondary to that could be a variety of reasons. Generous leave/fed holidays. Decent retirement. Good healthcare.

Cons

Sometimes you feel stovepiped. Beurecratic nightmares can be a headache. Job enrichment or enhancement is typically not there. Obviously boredom can set in if this is not addressed
