Pros

For a young man with very little work experience to draw on (1980), the AF was an excellent job for me. Coming from a small town, the travel opportunities were a real eye opener. I've traveled to England, Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and United Arab Emirates. I've seen 36 of 50 states. The education opportunities offered by the Air Force is hard to beat. While pursuing a career and support a family, I was also able to complete my Associate Degree in Hydraulic/Pneumatic Systems and Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing Technology. I highly recommend the Air Force.

Cons

Extended periods of separation from family was the hardest thing to deal with. I was stationed in England from 1992 to 1996 which had its own unique hardships. I deployed in 1997 to Saudi Arabia in support of Operation SOUTHERN WATCH after the first Gulf War. I deployed again in 2001 to Oman in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM. My final deployment was in 2005 to the United Arab Emirates in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. These deployments were very tough on my wife and kids, but they learned to function very well while I was gone.

Pros

1. service to your country 2. high sense of community and pride in work 3. outstanding co-workers 4. awesome benefits--a complete pension at 20 years!

Cons

1. irregular schedules (it's the best thing and the worst thing)--every day is different, which is great because it doesn't get dull; however, it's difficult to plan personal/family life around such a flexible and demanding schedule 2. deployments to undesireable places for 120 - 365 consecutive days

Pros

The job satisfaction in the Air Force is one of the most rewarding that I could have anticipated. The system of rewards and feedback is well established. Morale is enhanced by the many opportunities provided by a dedicated agency in charge of morale and welfare. Compensation is steady and is guaranteed, unlike many civilian jobs it is rare that members are 'let go' from steady and satisfying work.

Cons

Members are required to sacrifice their family life for extended periods of time because of deployments or long hours of training or exercising. Often, leadership is taught from a management book instead of something garnered from experience. Many senior leaders also seem to be bred from this corporate and conformed book leadership, instead of being born from experiences of the battlefields.
