Pros

Overall I have had great direct managers at Target who have supported my advancement. The headquarters buildings are nice and conveniently located. There is opportunity to advance - as long as you can manage through the political environment. There are lots of opportunities to take lateral moves to other areas.

Cons

Many places in headquarters are very political and people spend way to much time managing egos. The culture doesn't encourage or reward honest and open discussion and idea sharing. There are two many "pre-meetings" to agree on "messages" before meeting with other areas. This takes time away from actually doing the work that drives results.

Pros

If you're looking for large, retail experience, then Target is one of the few out there. However, expect frustration and an overly managed environment that actually stifles progress and inflates budgets.

Cons

Very little actual accountability within the group I was working in. Within twelve months, four different managers were involved with the group. Each with at least several years of experience within Target and yet they had very little ability to communicate ideas, deal with conflict, adhere to timelines and budgets, etc. In short, the group that I was exposed to was very sub par compared to other companies that I've been involved with.

Pros

It offers you a great short term experience of working in a fast paced and innovative company. It gives you a better understanding of how a Fortune 100 company operates in it's daily functions. It truly is one of the top ten corporations in the country when it comes to innovation and marketing. Target also does a lot with guest speaker series on anything from fashion, product design and innovation all the way to local politics and how it effects big box retailers. The ability to see leaders in these fields speak on average once a month was very beneficial to my career development.

Cons

Target does not do a good job of recognizing and retaining talent. It has such a strong "culture" that it casts off anybody who doesn't think or act like everyone else. People who conform move up, people that are diverse in thought and think for themselves, get pushed out. With the ever-changing demographic of America, Target HQ will have to reflect it's costumer base sooner than later. Diversity is recognized as a company initiative but it is all for show. Senior leadership does not buy into the value and importance of diversity at headquarters and the result is a lot of people that act the same and are the same.
