Pros

Pay is good, especially if you are International, you have no bills. Schlumberger provides everything. The industry sees the training program with Schlumberger as one of the best in the business. Great opportunities to move elsewhere once you gain experience.

Cons

You have no life! Expected to work 30 days offshore, 4 days on 'days off' that become days of working in the office. You might get some time off here and there, but you have no schedule and dont' know when these days off will come, so you can't make plans, ever. The one time i made plans and tickets for a vacation, it was cancelled due to 'business need'. Offshore on a rig, 98% of the staff have an equal 4 or 2 weeks on and 4 or 2 weeks off. While the Service hands from SLB, HAL, BHI, etc seem to be working non-stop. It sucks to see someone else making almost as much $$ as you, and work only 6 months out of the year.

Pros

For me, the best part of Schlumberger is Diversity: there are unlimited chances to work with people from different countries, different cultrure background. This is really interesting! By the way, Work/Life balance is also good. Longer annual leave than most of the other companies.

Cons

Some management rules related to Oilfield Service are not suitable in a Software R&D center. The process and standard of promoting a Software Engineer are still needed to be improved. Some people with poor technique skills get promoted while some really good developers cannot. Sometimes, it is not important how much you know, but how much you show.

Pros

Career planning Technology Training, mentoring, knowledge sharing, openness Sr management and colleagues are open and talented Multi-cultural environment Travelling around the world, once a year, at least A company that has money to invest in R&D HR system (goals, performance evaluation based on goals, etc) Computer specifics: Scrum Agile, support from very experienced software community Overall concerns with ethics, people & environment

Cons

Bad / unexperienced manager can challenge your motivation HR system is not followed many times People with beautiful background can be "over-recognized", even when their performance is not good Sr management doesn't want to hear the problems People from the "field" lives a total different world (hard lifestyle) from the office people If you want to grow to management side, be prepare to bring work home a lot
