Pros

There are incredibly smart and talented software developers from my perspective in the database division. If you like developing and maintaining systems software, there are many (and sometimes too many!) challenging problems to tackle in the database. If you like to learn and expand your horizons, there are many database components, database internals, algorithms, and optimizations for you to investigate. Developers are generally willing to share their knowledge, unless they are too busy with short-term deadlines. Management keeps politics to a minimum in the database division.

Cons

The company and database division have grown in size significantly in the last decade and have had creeping bureaucracy. Programming-in-the-large is never an easy task.

Pros

Oracle is taking over the enterprise software world, so if you want to work for the new leader its the place to be. Compensation is average to below average. Seems like the overall mentality is one of "clock in, get some stuff done, clock out". Very little drive. Some people view this as a plus.

Cons

Outsourcing and globalization. if you live in the US you wont be working for oracle in 10 years. Nobody cares if you are here or not, its very difficult to work your way up the chain.

Pros

Lots of exciting work getting done by smart and pleasant people. Good team atmosphere even with teams operating virtually across the globe.

Cons

Having joined from a small acquisition, it has been very difficult to get up to speed on what's required to do my job. Getting information about other teams/parts of company to do my work is very difficult. Internal aps and info sources are inscrutable - requiring much time to mine. Even long time veterans don't know much about how to get essential info. Raises were delayed by months this past year and were not retroactive to the beginning of the new evaluation year. Bonuses were very small to nothing for my team, which is a pretty strong one. As in many large companies, some people seem to have very little to do, while others, such as my team, have deliverables and deadlines that wouldn't be possible with 5 X's the number of people. Technology supporting internal processes is flakey and training on it is abysmal.
