      Big Company with Self-Service Style

      Pros

      as a developer you have flexible working environment, what you need is to get things done. but in this development phase you are almost on your own. and after that you have time to lean things you have interest. the workload is not that heavy. the oracle universities training is well worth attending. the internal mailing list is also helpful. it is an established development environment, QA, Support are doing their job good and cumulate a well organized knowledge database on the metalink.

      Cons

      the promotion and compensation system are a bit too bureaucratic. but the reviews from the rating agency think it is good at control on the expense.

      Pros

      Its a stable company, which in this economy is very important. When the economy improves however, they will need to rely on other things to attract and retain their best and brightest. Its a great bunch of people trying to accomplish a great thing. They all work very hard without much outside support. If you are the independent type you will flourish in this environment.

      Cons

      Very political environment, people seem to be afraid to say what they really think without finding a way to spin it. Management needs to support the work that is going on instead of creating roadblocks. Management also needs to be more decisive and they need to be supportive of and recognize contributors of their teams

      Oracle: Bring your A game.

      Pros

      Great product line and prestige. Also, the vast majority of Oracle employees are very intelligent and very talented. It was great to work with a group of smart people.

      Cons

      Incredible pressure to perform NO MATTER WHAT. They are very intolerant of outside circumstances and current market conditions. The numbers have to be met no matter what happens. No excuse is tolerated and that is because the expectations flow upwards. Each manager has heavy expectations on them and each one of their managers has even more on their shoulders. Also, Oracle will reduce staff regularly and without any fanfare in the market place. They will whack chunks of the org chart with no notice. Only producing salespeople are safe.
