Pros

Very good amount of annual leave. National pay bands (although they don't increase). Good pension (which I'll never actually receive). Excellent on the job training (But no more bursaries for future students).

Cons

Limited career progression in my area of theatres. Managers with either no clinical experience or Nurse managers with no formal leadership training which hosts a very poor leadership and management technique on a national scale.

Pros

*Meeting new people and helping patients. *It's a Go to work, do your bit and come home type of job. Not much responsibility. *Ability to gain more hours

Cons

*Pay... it really is peanuts. *Management are disorganised and lazy. *Only ever met my manager twice and I was there for just over a year. *Training is not done by a supervisor or senior members.. I had a lady who had only been here 3 months train me. She did her best but wasn't very sure or knowledgeable about anything. *High turnover of staff. *Work on your own a lot. *Getting treated poorly by other staff in the hospital. Maybe it's just in this one hospital but the Head Sisters, doctors and most surgeons either don't acknowledge you or talk to you like dirt... And no one cares or does anything about it. *The whole process of ordering, making and serving hospital meals is archaic. Still writing down patients orders on sheets of paper and cutting then out. Thought.. if any place should be hi tech it's a hospital right lol?! Most restaurant waiters have mini tablets now. It's clearer for everyone to read, saves paper and could keep a better track on a patients diet or eating habits. *Serving microwave meals to patients. I understand that there's more choice now but the nutrition can't be very good and most meals look terrible. Making fresh food would, cut costs, lessen waste and boost patient nutrition. ... I could go on.

Enourmous pressure

Pros

satisfying job, good terms and conditions, great colleagues, good feeling of doing something that contributes to patient care, at higher management levels plenty of autonomy

Cons

constant pressure re money and making savings, local politics get in the way of patient care, cuts mean loss of staff facilities such as staff dining room, car parking charges for staff expensive, extra hours often needed and no pay, work 24/7 including lots of weekends means poor work/life balance
