Pros

Lot of cash to navigate economic downturn, big installed base, great people to work with if one is on the software development side of the house. Very hard to get fired, unless one does something really stupid like breaking the law

Cons

red tape, too many marketers with too little experience, poor career opportunities in marketing, cliques could control promotions and salary increases by manipulating the performance review process. Slow pace to innovation because of the big legacy. Ensuring backward compatibility is a hard task that few customers appreciate. Not diversified portfolio, revenue still 90% based on Windows and Office flagships. E&D and MSN are bleeding divisions with no clear plan to get ever profitable (yes, that means paying for all the 10+ year loses)

Pros

For me, I enjoy the products, which encompass everything from Xbox games, PC hardware products to commercial software. From a supply chain perspective, you can very easily be exposed to many different environments. The products, combined with the global footprint, fast-moving environment, and many intelligent coworkers make it a great place to work. Additionally, managers are very flexible with working hours and working from home.

Cons

High expectations of performance, often it's a stressful environment, with frequent changes in direction. As mentioned below, often the Senior Management team is seen as changing business directions frequently. This often creates a stressfull environment for more junior employees.

Pros

Global company provides employees with many different cultural perspectives. High energy level of most employees. Opportunity to transfer to other divisions / geographies. Great benefits if you're in Redmond and pretty good salaries. Strong company culture creates sense of community. Great internal promotion prospects. Excitement that comes with being part of such a high-profile company / industry (epic battle with Google, Linux, etc.).

Cons

At times, there was too much bureaucracy...Also, with low turnover rates, the culture is quite insular. Notice the way many job descriptions are written on their job site - many of the acronyms are only understandable if you've been in Microsoft. The concept of 'changing lives' with software was often overblown.
