Pros

In general: * It's a noble cause: making clinical trials more efficient helps drugs get approved faster and cost less. * Everybody is expected to have opinions about everything--it's a cliche, but the employees are *very empowered*. You can practically write your own job description if you make a good case. * The company's doing well--raises and promotions come fast, as do special cash bonuses for things like (for an engineer) finding an exploit in another team's code. In my department: * Engineers work with a net: 1 tester for every 5 engineers, code review on every commit, test-driven development with automated continuous integration. * New development is in Ruby on Rails (that's still cool, right?) and makes every effort to do things right. * You can get paid to write open-source software--Medidata is increasingly releasing everything it can in public repositories on GitHub. * There's a big training budget if you want to go to conferences or take a course on the side. * Very relaxed environment--you'll often see us multitasking between work and a card game. * You can advance arbitrarily far without needing to become a manager; talented engineers can have authority without any direct reports if that's what they prefer.

Cons

At the moment, too many high-level design and administrative decisions are falling on the same few shoulders--people who simply don't have time to review and approve everything they see. It can be frustrating.

Politics, politics, politics

Pros

Really smart, passionate, mostly nice co-workers. Company is very successful and we do a great job for our customers in all ways.

Cons

There are two major cons. One is that if you don't play politics, you will not have a career with this company. In fact, if you are not on the "good side" of the President of the company, which has very little to do with actual performance (has everything to do with being his drinking buddy), you could be fired with no notice, no warning, nothing. The second con is that HR has gone downhill in the past 6-12 months. From the head of HR to the staff in that department, no one really knows HR or especially how to deal with employees. You can't talk to anyone anymore, and you feel like you are bothering them when you have a question. And most companies feel HR is the most important department and should be one of the positive aspects of the culture! It's really not what it used to be.

Unrealistic expectations

Pros

The office atmosphere is positive and the coworkers are friendly. Good benefits as well as flexibility with working at home/office.

Cons

- The company continuously focuses to be at the top of the industry while seemingly disregarding the brunt of its own staff dissatisfaction(s). - Many employees do the work of 3 or 4. Unrealistic expectations (with little to no planning on implementation) are unfairly placed upon the staff while changes are not given the reasonable time to be implemented. - Good luck in receiving positive feedback from management when you do the equivalent of parting the Red Sea.
