Pros

Good pay for a job that doesn't require studies. The RRSP contributions being matched by the employer and the insurances make it more worth it. If you work as a warehouse clerk, it definitely keeps you in shape. The schedules can be flexible, with different shifts to choose from, and the weekend shifts are very forgiving for limited availabilities if you're a student. There's a lot of diversity in the people hired. Some of the managers are truly amazing.

Cons

Warehouse clerks are generally treated very poorly, and the job is extremely physical with high risks of injuries. The air quality is awful, with the warehouse being dusty, cold in winter and overwhelmingly hot in the summer. There is a no-accomodation unwritten "policy" or culture if you have any health problems: you can either do the job or you can't. They talk about the Purple Promise and how there's zero tolerance for harassment, but don't follow up on it and don't fire people with many complaints against them. The management has no idea what it's like to do a clerk's job and most of them couldn't care less. There is quite a lot of pressure on being productive, even though they keep saying that safety and quality come first. Speaking of which, they say safety is their top priority, but if you signal an unsafe situation, they do nothing to change it most of the time, saying there's no budget for that. If you suggest solutions to make things better, they will tell you that it's been like that for 15 years and that nothing will change. The people they choose to give a promotion to, especially to make them supervisors, are chosen not so much on merit, but more as a political decision. Well over 90% of the supervisors are men, and it's not a surprise: most female supervisors end up discouraged very quickly as they want to make things better for everyone and notice very quickly that they will not be able to. While there is a lot of diversity in the people hired, there's a lot of racism and sexism. Women are looked at like they're walking steaks if they do so much as wear sports leggings to work their physical job. A lot of the employees seriously lack social education (to have empathy and to include people, to not discriminate, etc.)
