Pros

Opens doors for organisations that you would not necessarily get interviews for. Help you write a good C.V.

Cons

FDM is essentially a glorified recruitment company. Whilst the teachers are great and give off the impression they're the only ones who care, the training is nowhere near the value that they place on it with the agreement. Once you're through your training, the likelihood is you will be stuck in 'the pond', an area for employees without a placement yet. There is nothing to do in the pond and it is very much a case of wiling away time. Before you complete your training you're advised to be proactive and contact account managers about positions if there's one you want. This is not the case. Account managers will contact you as and when they need you, and it can be a case of filling any position going. I only had 2 interviews for the role that I was trained for and ended up getting a role that also isn't related to that stream. The atmosphere in the training centre is almost like being at school, being made to feel guilty about certain work or having your top button undone. Leaving one minute early is frowned upon. Whilst I understand they are getting graduates used to a working environment and trying to create standards, it's not how the world works. If you live far away, whilst you're not paying for the travel with the bursary scheme, the notion of having to travel to Leeds to sit on a computer and do nothing is pointless. It's done under the guise that you may be needed in the office for interview, but given that a majority of interviews are done by phone, or most people live within a commutable distance, it seems silly (besides, it's not like you could go out all day every day when you're not earning any money!) The pay is terrible, but that's not what motivates me. They just make things up as they go along, there was no plan in place for moving or when you need to move, just a rough idea. In sum, FDM are just a cattle market, where the Account Managers will only use who you need, and you will get a position based on your own skills and abilities. Unfortunately, it is only due to FDM that many doors opened for such companies. Having said that, I would never ever recommend this experience to a friend, unless there were no alternatives.

Thank you for your detailed feedback. I’m glad you recognise the opportunities we provide but it concerns me that you think we don’t care. Ultimately, we are a people business with one goal: to launch your career, and this is what we do for hundreds of people every year. Most of our consultants are indeed placed straight away or even before their training is completed, so they have a placement waiting for them. However, sometimes there is a period of time before or in between placements. You will hopefully understand that this is a function of the market and beyond the control of FDM. During any such time we encourage consultants to take advantage of the further training and coaching that is available – including classroom based training and Pluralsight. We are always looking for ways to improve and welcome all feedback. If you are willing to meet with me to discuss your feedback further, I would welcome the opportunity. Your wellbeing is always our priority. Please email me at jonathan.young@fdmgroup.com Jonathan Young – CIO

Pros

An introduction to a working type environment for recent graduates and a reintroduction to civvy st for ex forces staff. A real sense of camaraderie with fellow trainees. I made some good friends in the academy that I will keep in touch with. Good interview training. Initial training is of high quality (Common weeks Pro skills, SQL, Excel) though it is very much over valued by FDM. So much so that I felt after these weeks I knew the subjects well enough to instruct them myself Could be a good introduction to IT for non stem grads but if you aren't enjoying it by the end of week 2 leave. A corporate subscription to pluralsight for upskilling

Cons

A very poor (possibly unenforceable) contract that hangs over you for 2 years. I don't believe that FDM fulfilled the terms of its training agreement with me and had they attempted to recoup their overvalued "investment" I would have fought them in court and according to my solicitor I would have won, my advice to any prospective hire is that they note every interaction with HR and management in any way and if called into a meeting ask for minutes to be taken and a witness to sit in. The sense of camaraderie is driven by a sense of us vs them in the way there would be camaraderie amongst prisoners vs their guards No money Little to no communication with the account managers who are supposed to be finding consultants roles. After the initial well structured training the development training is not of the same calibre and to be honest a Udemy or pluralsight course would teach you just as much. No certification for the development courses. Though there is for some of the other streams.

I’m glad you enjoyed the initial training and the people you met at FDM. I’m sorry that you wouldn’t recommend joining us though. We appreciate that the programme may not suit everyone, which is why we spend time upfront going through the model and all the terms and conditions, during the assessment process. We present the whole programme including the two-year bond which is a commitment by FDM and you. There is a 2 week ‘cooling off’ period after starting for you to really work out if FDM is the right career move for you. The training is fully funded by FDM and, like any business, FDM needs to realise a return, this is why the two-year bond is in place – allowing the fees to be paid back only on the rare occasion that the contract isn’t fulfilled. However, the vast majority of FDM consultants do progress to enjoy successful and rewarding careers. I’m really sorry that it didn’t work out for you though. We always encourage people to post an honest review on Glassdoor in regards to their experience – which may be positive or negative (we do not ask anyone to change ratings). I would welcome the opportunity to discuss your feedback further if you’re up for it. Pros

Good training, good working environment, most of those opportunities are good.

Cons

Lack of flexibility, I was forced to work in another city and the boss in HK yelled at me when I try to talk with him. He never respect his employees.
